We were devastated when in Dec. 2004, we learned my dad had stage 4 colon cancer with mets to the liver. We heard horrible prognosis from the first doctor. Therefore, we moved forward and saw others. We ended up with Dr. Ahmed Ghany at The Ohio State University Hospital, James Care East. He led dad through positive thinking as he told dad to take care of his thoughts and Dr. Ghany would do the medical part. (He also prays for his patients 5x a day!) Within 6 months, the time in which the first doc would have buried him, Dr. Ghany had his cancer under control and ready for surgery with the amazing Dr. David Geller at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Dr. Geller was amazing..and IS amazing. He removed 60% of dad's liver - and yet dad never even got jaundice. He had his mentor do the first part of the 14- hour surgery which was removing 12" of colon. Dad had never even been in a hospital before this ordeal. but came out great. He was free of growing cancer.
Since then, Dad's colon and liver remain clear. He has had some microscopic spots show up on his lungs - Dr. Ghany is continuing his vigilance by keeping them at bay with chemo. Dr. Ghany stresses quality of life. He gives dad breaks to do those things that matter most.
In a world where the young idolize the sports stars and movie stars, our mentors should be men like these great docs. They have both helped many people from this site as well as those my family sends their way.
If you have a question about your liver, call, email or fax Dr. Geller, he is wonderful about getting back to you....you'll be glad you did. Godspeed.
