will daughter get it

Hi-

I had Hodgkins when I was 16. My daughter is 20.  Can she or will she get cancer, too?  Right now she has been suffering from allergies.  Well, we think she is.  She says she's been getting worse.  Nothing helps. She was away this summer in Tennessee and had problems, too.  Now she's at school here in Illinois.  She's looked on line and said that her symptoms could be different things.  One of them leukemia.  I'm a little worried.  She is away and can't see a doctor.  Please does anyone have any advice here.

Hello, I wanted to respond to your message as this situation is something I'm really familiar with... I hope I can help you with my story and I'm sending positive vibes your way! My mum had Hodgkin's when she was 19 and has been in remission for some 30 years. We never suspected/considered that Hodgkin's could be a problem for the rest of the family, as previous medical thought on the matter was that this is not a genetic-related cancer. Unfortunately, in July of this year I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's too, after a lump appeared on my neck. I'm 26 years old. I'm currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment, with possible radiation treatment following. My doctor suggests that while Hodgkin's is NOT a genetic-iinked cancer, in the same way that breast cancer is, there is some sort of genetic link, albeit tiny. He suggested my mum passed onto me a "precondition" to develop Hodgkin's but other factors are involved.... doctors currently think Glandular Fever (or Mono in the US?) can turn into Hodgkin's Disease in certain people who have the "precondition". I should stress that the chances of you and your daughter (or me and my mother) both having Hodgkin's is very small. It's a really unusual situation, but it IS possible. I truly hope and pray your daughter is fine and will not develop Hodgkin's but I can only suggest she sees a doctor as soon as possible. As far as I know, the only way to get a diagnosis is a biopsy of the lymph node - perhaps getting the tests done will prove she does not have the disease, and set her (and your) mind at ease. Hi- Thanks for replying so quickly.  My daughter's symptoms seem to be subsiding.  She is feeling a little better.  It's good to know that she might not necessarily get Hodgkin s.  I just wonder about the other blood diseases, too.  I guess her chances of getting anything is 50/50.  Healthy people with no bad genes still get diseases later. So anything can happen.  I need to stop worrying.

Sorry, that you have Hodgkin's  now.  I hope and pray that the treatments are better these days and that you will recover quickly.

W.S.
