My father-in-law is in the hospital. He was diagnosed wioth Metastatic Kidney cancer a couple of years ago. It has spread to his lungs...he is currently taking Sutent and thought Sutenet was the cause for severe diareahea.
Two weeks ago he had 4 teeth pulled and was put on an antibiotic. He was rushed to the ER last weekend with severe diareaha, dehydration, etc. Tests confirm that he now has C-diff (abreviated) a disease that is sometimes caused by antibitoics. According to the dr. he doesn't have enough good and bad bacteria in his stomach now to fight the disease.....he has bloody diareaha, dehydrated, weak, no appetite....very miserable
Has anybody out there had this, heard of this?
Thanks for any kind of response.
Hello:
Sounds like (to me) your father-in-law has a bad case of pseudomembranous colitis caused by the bacterium clostridium difficile.
This type of colitis, to my understanding, can be caused by certain antibiotics that alter the gut flora by allowing other bacteria (the bad bugs) that are resistant to the antibiotic used, to over grow.
Some antibiotics such as clindamycin, to my understanding, can cause this.
Has your doctor discussed using something like metronidazole, to combat the c. difficile? Also, if your father-in-law has no problems with yogurt, it may help. Keep him well hydrated with good clean water
Good luck and God Bless.
