Hello,

My name is Trina, I am from the Mississippi area. I am 30 years old and the doctor found a large mass on my left kidney the size of a baby's head. I suppose to undergo surger October 19, 2009, for the removal of my left kidney along with the kidney. Please if anyone has been through this before I really need words of encouragement. I want to know everything to expect along with the recovery stage. I have prayed to God, I just want to know will I be able to work like I was, be able to life and have a normal life. I have a 4 year old and 5 year old. Please someone respond!

Trina,

Don't fret.  I had a radical nephrectomy of my left kidney in April '09 and I am doing quite well so far.  Don't get me wrong, the surgery is quite uncomfortable and recovery is somewhat slow, but the hospital had me sitting up the night of my surgery and walking the next day.  The fear is natural...I had it too because I have three children and the scare of cancer can really send things reeling.

I was back to work a month and a half after my surgery and I am slowly getting back to my old self.  This board has been a blessing and the info the patients and caretakers supply is priceless.  I am on that road of trying to stay cancer free and so far, so good.

Just have faith and all will be fine.  God bless and good luck.

Denny

Trina, I had my let kidney removed on 8/12/09. My tumor was a lot smaller than yours but I was back to work in three weeks. The length of recover depends on he type of surgery. I had a laproscopic hand assisted procedure. It was a 6" incision nesr my navel and three small 1" incisions nearby.

Beyond that it depends on where the cancer has spread if at all. My had mets to the lungs and I am completing my 1st week of sutent today. My surgery was not that bad so if possible try to get them to do a laproscopic procedure if possible.

Good Luck and let us know how you are doing.

Hi Trina

I had my left kidney removed by a radical nephrectomy at the end of January 2009. I had 6 days in hospital after the operation. It is very painful for a few days but once over that it soon becomes less painful. After getting home from hospital I did sleep alot for about 10 days which is common, it allows your body to do some repairs.

I returned to work 9 weeks after the op and although I still get occasional pain the only problem is that the area below the scar is numb because they cut thru the nerves and it taks sometime to get use to the feeling.

I have had 2 CT scans since the op and my mets on my lungs and bone have shown no change so my Oncologist does not think I need another scan for a year.

In the last 3 months I have been on holiday to Italy, Cyprus and Egypt without any problem and I feel that I can do anything I did with 2 kidneys.

Take Care

Steve

Trina,

Hi. My husband had his right kidney removed in May 2009 and we were both very scared, as we also have young children. He was 39 when he had it removed and he is doing great. It is somewhat of a slow recovery that he just had to take his time with to get back to normal activity, but he is now doing almost 100% of what his normal routine was before his surgery. He was in the hospital for six days, which is a little less than what the doctor had told him, but he was determined to recover as quickly as possible. I think the most important thing is don't push yourself after you get out of the hospital. Take your time and do things a little at a time. Where are you having your surgery at?

Hello Everyone,

This is Trina from Mississippi. I had my kidney removed Monday October 19, 2009. The doctor released me today which is Thursday October 22, 2009. I am very very sore and in alot of pain. Other than that I am great. I had a real good doctor. I was in the hospital four days. My surgery lasted about 4 1/2 hours because he said it was a big tumor or mass that he had to remove along with my left kidney. He told me and my family that he was able to get all of the cancer and that I will need follow up appointments every three months to make sure everything is ok. I was very scared at first, but I have went through it and I am ok. I prayed and I just thank God for giving me my life back. My right kidney kicked in immediately with no problem. I have been going to the bathroom regularly and I have not noticed I only have one kidney now. Everything is going wonderful. They got me up the second day and wanted me to walk. I have been making very small steps, again I am very sore and paining but the worst part is behind me. Anyone who is going through what I have gone through I have to say stay encouraged, pray and God will see you through this. God has seen me through and being scared is natural, we are human. Just take your time like I am doing and get your strength back. One day at a time. I just wanted everyone to know that it is ok. You will and can go through it. I just did and I just turned 30. I had my surgery in Memphis, TN. I will continue to post my progress. I am greatful.
