Reverse Colostomy

Hello I've written a few weeks ago for the first time. I had to tell my story dealing with my chemo and radiation treatments. After reading the horror stories from everyone else I wanted to tell my experiences. Which were not as bad as those I read here....Since all my test results came back "cancer free". I was offered the reverse colostomy which is why I researched this site in the first place. Again I was reading about the horrors and aftermath of the pain and sleepless nights running to the toilet. I personally feel for those who does through such discomfort. For me...I was also nervous and afraid because another patient had told me his horror story. Even though I blocked he's experience from my own in the back of my mind there was fear. I woke up of course with the normal pains the same as when I got the colostomy. It hurts a little more because of the reconnecting I guess. Or maybe you forgot what the pain was before. The good thing is every day you feel better!! Day after day....the pain subsides. The doctor encouraged me to get out of bed and walk to the door of my room. That was a start.....Naturally you have to retrain your body to function normally. And after days of liquids there really isn't a reason to use the stool. But the nurses asked me frequently how many times and how much water did I drink. Apparently this is important for your recovery. After 2 days they gave me a laxative..Well...I had to struggle to get up and get to the toilet which was also a good thing. Because I gained strength and the next days it became easier and easier. The baby food diet was only a few days and then things picked up. I've been out a week and am allowed to eat anything. I don't have to wear diapers, but I when I have to go...... I go now....I sleep all night only waking up still at hospital time at 6:30 am. I just go to the toilet and then back to bed! I'm doing fine and just wanted to share again. Remember...everybody's experience is there own. Don't let others experiences give you fear. It is something to go through. And if this story helps anyone going through reversal colostomy surgery easier.......I'm happy I could help. I've had my staples removed from my stomach on Monday and the swelling is going down also day by day. We even had some hot days left from summer and I've been able to wear a tight t-shirt!! *g*

Stay Strong..

Good morning!

I loved your positive message.  I am in my 4th week of chemo and  radiation. I have rectal cancer. I like to refer to it as booty cancer.  I feel great so far.  I am a mother of 5.  (3 are still at home)  Your message stood out because of your positive approach to your recovery.  I am finding that staying positive sure makes the little difficulties easier.  I will most likely have my surgery after the first of the year.   They tell me I probably won't have to have a temp. colostomy, but there is always that possibility and I want to be prepared.  I have heard some horror stories too.  I choose to tuck those stories aside.  I have so many friends and family that give me all the "warm fuzzies"  I need each day. GOOD MEDICINE with only good side effects!!  :)

I hope your recovery continues to be good.

Thank you for the uplifting message.
