LEEP Success Rate

I am 23 years old and was recently diagnosed with HPV and high grade cervical dysplasia. I'm extremely frustrated because I had the Gardasil vaccine two years before my abnormal PAP, limited my partners, and use condoms every time. I know this doesn't make me risk free, but I can't help feeling like the odds are against me.

I had a PAP tests every year since I was 18, and they have always been normal. I have only had one partner since then, so I'm pretty sure I have only become infected with HPV in the last few months. My doctor says that only one small area of the HPV cells found in my colposcopy is high grade, and I don't have any HPV or abnormal cells on the inside of my cervix.

I'm scheduled for a LEEP procedure in two weeks, but I'm worried that the tests will come back that I have cervical cancer, or that the dysplasia will keep coming back. What is the relative success rate of a LEEP procedure? how likely is it that I have cervical cancer now?

Hello...I too have HGSIL and will be having a LEEP done on the 19th.  From what I've researched on medical websites, the success rate of the LEEP is really high.  However, it seems with all the message boards, that a lot of women experience recurrence but, that is just the message boards.  I also read a study on the chance of having cancer with a colposcopy/biopsy showing HGSIL.  It stated that the percentage was really low however, one study I read told of 9 women that went into the LEEP with the diagnosis of HGSIL and after the LEEP, found that 6 of the 9 women had cancer and ended up having hysterectomies.  This scared me to death but, the statistics I've found showed that the chances are low.  Either way, you can feel comfort in the fact that even if they find cancer during the LEEP, chances are that you will have caught it early and be rid of it for good.  Not that this will comfort you much but, if you had invasive cancer, most likely you would be showing symptoms...like bleeding between periods, pain with intercourse and pelvic pain.  It's good that you are precautious and are taking care of yourself.  Just don't worry too much until there is actually something to worry about (cancer).  I have wasted a lot of time worrying causing my life to be disasterous.  Always remember, things can always be worse and someone else always has it worse than you.  This has come to be my motto lately...it's about the only way I've found comfort through all of this.  It keeps me going knowing that someone else has it way worse off than me.  Good luck with your LEEP!!  God bless!
