high liver count

My husband was diagnosed with gbm Sept 08. After being on Temodar his MRI showed progession. We switched to lomustine and the MRI showed 2 tumors shrunk slightly, and 1 remained the same. Last week his blood test indicated that his liver count was very high so we could not take the next cycle. Today the liver count was even higher. Last week Chris stated taking homeopathic drops to help the liver re-coup. Nothing has improved though. I am really worried about not being able to continue with his chemo for now. Has anyone experienced this. We live in Canada so our only 2 options are Temodar or Lomustine nothing else is approved. Please any suggestions or comments about what happens when chemo has to be postponed or discontinued.

Glenda, Chris diagnosed Sept 08, also has primary kidney cancer

By any chance did he have a recent blood transfusion?  Have they tested for Hepatitis B?  We ran into this same situation after my husband received the first blood transfusion of his life and one month later his liver counts skyrocketed and he tested positive for hep B.  Chemo was stopped, and treatment started for the hep B.  They said it was impossible for this to happen but at the time he received the transfusion, all his blood counts crashed due to chemo.  It might be worth asking about.

Good luck and stay strong.

My DH's liver numbers (normal range being - I think - 4 to 60 or something like that) had skyrocketed to 1800 (yes, FOUR DIGITS) while he was on decadron. When we lowered the decadron, the numbers came down; when we'd have to increase the decadron, the numbers would go back up again).

I know in some situations the decadron is a must-have, but gratefully, Tom was eventually able to wean off it completely and now has been decadron free for several months, with no increase in brain tissue swelling.

When it's possible to decrease or remove the decadron altogether, maybe that'll help.

In the meantime, Tom didn't have to take any additional drugs or anything to control those numbers: he stayed away from alcohol and tylenol; I don't think he took any other specific actions to mitigate those high, high numbers.

Hope this helps -- Take care - Linda
