Recent TCC diagnosis

My 13 y/o female Samoyed was diagnosed on 9/25. She had a well dog visit and my Vet. happened to use his ultrasound machine to see if she had any bladder stones due to small blood in her UA results. It was located to the back of her bladder (not in the neck (trigone) so she had surgery that day to remove part of her bladder with the mass. I then took her to a Vet. Oncologist and through further testing it was found to still be along the wall of her bladder but had not spread beyond it. She said she needed chemo along with Piroxicam to
keep it from reaching the trigone. She had her first treatment with Mitoxantrone on 10/01.
Reading posts I have the following questions:
What results have people had with the Mitoxantrone/Piroxicam protocol. How many treatments did it take to see results if any?
Has anyone had their dog given the new chemo. drug Gemzar and if so, what results?
I also have questions about meds. but will post more.
Thanks.
did you see any results?

Hi.  Sorry to hear about your dog's cancer diagnosis.  To answer your question about the mitoxantrone & piroxicam, when my scottie JJ had that treatment at CSU animal cancer center in 2008, it stopped the cancer from growing or spreading for 5 months.  He had the chemo once every 3 weeks.  No side effects other than some sleepiness the first night after each infusion. Then the tcc started growing again & they switched him to doxirubicin which made him sick so we didn't do that drug again & we went to just piroxicam.  He went downhill quickly after that. One of the techs at CSU told me they had a female dog with tcc that had been doing mitoxantrone & piroxicam for two years & was doing fine.  It depends on the dog--for some it doesn't help, for most I think it's like with my dog--it just stops it from growing for awhile.  Then there are some that it really works great & they are given a lot of time by the mitoxantrone.  My 11 yr old female scottie Scampi(daughter of the one I lost last year to tcc) now had been diagnosed with tcc & CSU is still recommending the mitoxantrone & piroxicam & they also have a new radiation treatment that targets only the tumor & they've had really good results with it.  But the special radiation is pretty expensive.  Hope this helps.
