Hello everyone, My husband is not responding to the chemo with the latest being oxaliplatnium, lecavorin and 5-FU. He developedsevere dehydration and pulmonary emboli. He was placed on lovenox and had to have a filter inserted. I'm OK with that but they also placed an esophageal stent in yesterday for ease of eating and swollowing. I really don't see a difference with him swollowing. He still has a hard time with solids as he did before. Has anyone had one placed and did it help? Please let me know ASAP so I can tell him what others have experienced.
Thank You.

My mom had a stent placed in early May. She has had excruiciating pain ever since then. It helps her swallow food. Mom is primarily on porridge, noodle soup etc. When she has solid rice, I always cook soup for her to go with rice. Except for the pain and not being able to lie down to sleep for over 4 months, she has improved a lot. Her appetite is way better now and her weight has been stable during chemo.

Does your husband have any pain after the stent is placed in? Mom's doctors can't figure out why mom is having so much pain. But they refused to take out the stent since it is too risky. I wonder what is other people's experience with the stent.

No, not pain but his swallowing hasn't improved and he has severe burning in his stomach. Maybe time will help it and he gets terrible gas pains at odd times. I don't know how to help him and I am getting fustrated, I want him to be comfortable.

I am sorry to hear what your husband is going through. I remember back in May/June, you were going to check with his doctor why radiation is not offered. Did he ever get radiation? If not, you may want to bring it up with his doctor again since he is not responding to chemo. I suspect the tumor might be blocking the esophagus so he is having problem with solid food.

Please stay strong and be hopeful for your husband. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

Dr. Ilson says the tumors are growing rapidly and he is not responding to treatments. I asked about radiation and he said that it probably  wouldn't be would not be effective since his liver tumors are now touching at certain points. He is not in pain and his swallowing has improved slightly.

I don't know what to do, what would you do?

Phyllis
