"I am a 46yo (white) female, I have been checking statistics for stomach cancer and I do see as a female and with my race the odds are very low, and my doc says don't worry,but I feel like crap, so heres my story.
For the last 2 months I have been getting stomach "pain" constant,more uncomfortable than pain,along with a feeling of "fullness" sometimes with a sense of nausea. No weight loss. I would say I have been getting indigestion and reflux for as long as I can remember. Also,about a year ago I got a barium swallow test that showed that I have a hiatal hernia.
3 months ago I got a cbc and esr which both were fine.
Last week he ordered a ultra sound and a blood test for H pylori which both were fine.
Is it possible to get stomach cancer without having h pylori?

Thank you so much for your input, I will say a prayer for everyone here,

Kathy

Hi Kathy;

I am a 58 yr.old BF that was diagnosed in May 2009 with stomach(gastric) cancer.  My evaluations started out with an upper G.I. and Barium Swallow x-ray procedures to check the esophagus, stomach and small intestine. My prior symptons were only able to eat small portions of food and would feel full. Starting losing weigh as a result of not eating enough, then started having stomach pain.  After having the Upper GI, which there was no evidence of hiatal hernia, no gastro reflux observed, but however irregularity and noduality of the contour of the greater curvature of the stomach body and fundus, which lead to a concern for an infiltrative process.  Further evaluation with an EGD was recommended. After EGD procedure, was diagnosed with stage IV gastric cancer.  Started chemo in June, I was hospitalized for 1 week for treatments each month of June, July, August and September. I am currently now on my 5th cycle, down to 2-day treatment as an outpatient, also for the 6th cycle.  Tumor is stablized, no growth.  I feel great and have gained 20 of the 30 lbs. I initially lost.  Good appetite, no nausea/vomiting. Did have hair lost. Please stay on doctors and if you are not receiving the care you think you deserve, get a second opinion or another doctor.

Thank you so much for your response, so glad to hear that you are feeling better and have some weight gain (sorry about the hair) I have made a app with a gastrologist, unfortunatly, they couldent get me in until Nov 11, so I am in complete freak out mode. The pressure feels like it did when I was pregnant and the baby was pressing upward if that makes any sense. You are in my prayers

Thanks Kathy

Hello Kathy, the answer to your question is absolutely yes, you can have cancer in your stomach without the H-pylori bacteria. I have MALT lymphoma but have tested negative for H-pylori. I initially went in for general gastric problems and like you have had reflux for years. They did an EGD and told me I had 2 ulcers that they biopsied. They came back positive for the lymphoma. I had a bone marrow aspiration, PET scan...and everything is clear everywhere else. They did a second biopsy looking for the bacteria which came back negative for both the bacteria and the lymphoma so they did a third biopsy and it came back positive for the lymphoma again. That was just this week so I haven't had treatment yet but they are telling me radiation is the treatment of choice. I am reading online that surgery is also a reasonable treatment. I am a 54 year old white female. Sissy

Sissy, Thank you for your reply,I went to see a gastrologist yeasterday and he schedueled a egd for wed. I have to say I don't ever remember being this frightened in my life. The doc was saying that "cancer" is not on the topof his list of what he is looking for, but I'm sure that based on my race and age,and neg for h-pylori, that is what he is going by. On this board I am seeing many people on the younger that average posing here. Was there anything in your bloodwork or anything else that was off at all before your diagnosis? I hope you are feeling alright. I appriciate you taking time out to answer my question.

Thanks Kathy

No, my bloodwork has always been fine. I went to the doctor in June because I have a lapband and it had slipped. I was having problems swallowing. They did an EGD. I had 2 ulcers that they biopsied and it came back positive for the Marginal cell (MALT) lymphoma. Totally surprised everyone because they weren't even looking for that. They did a second biopsy looking for the H-pylori bacteria and it came back negative for the bacteria and negative for the lymphoma so last week they did a third biopsy. It came back positive for the lymphoma. I have had every other test like a bone marrow aspiration, PET scan, CT...and it is all negative. Since the pathology for this cancer is hard to diagnose I am having my slides looked at by another lab before I move ahead to treatment. I feel fine and always have.
