My wife has just been diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor in her bladder. The surgeon went in a week and a half ago to remove the tumor and I don't know if he got it all out. The tumor was hyper vascular and bled alot. He had to cauterize the inside of her bladder. We are scheduled to meet with an onocologist next week. Has anyone ever heard of a tumor like this in the bladder?
Thanks,
George
George,
Neuroendocrine tumors are quite rare. Much will depend on whether the bladder is the primary site and whether metastasis has occurred; you'll know these things when all the biopsy report comes back.
You will want her to be treated at a major cancer center by oncologists who have experience treating neuroendocrine cancers. Your community oncologist will be an important local resource, but her primary care should be overseen by a neuroendocrine cancer specialist; at the very least you should have such an expert give a second opinion before starting chemotherapy or radiation. Time is of the essence and they'll want to start as soon as she heals from the surgery, so start now to get your team together. Your surgeon and oncologist are good places to start for recommendations. Good luck.
