My husband has had his port in since April 2008 when he started chemo for Stage 3 EC and so far his scans have been clear. The Oncologist was going to remove the port after 1 yr. (his last chemo was in July 2008 so that would have been July 2009) but his veins were affected by the chemo and it was difficult withdrawing blood and getting the "dye" into him whenever he had a CT. I believe his veins will recover but, for right now, his Oncologist says the port is the only access he has to withdraw blood and he doesn't want it removed right now. My husband has another CT scan on Nov. 12 and he is suppose to contact his surgeon to see if he implanted the new type of port that they can use to put the "dye" through using the port for his next CT. During the last CT scan about 4 months ago, he got a large hematoma when they attempted to access his vein using his arm.
He would really like the port out. We have a little Yorkie that we have to watch so she doesn't bump it. Also, his Oncologist told him he couldn't fly with the port in.
