Pain medications for EC

My husband's cancer returned four months after surgery.  He had surgery August 08 and it returned Dec 08 with mets in the liver, gastric pullup, and lung.  He just spent 7 weeks in the hospital with an infection believed to be from the mediport.  It was removed and a J tube put in.  He had a J tube when he had his operation but it was pulled out accidentally at the hospital.  He was fed for 8 months by TPN thru the mediport.  He has not tolerated the J tube well at all.  We have tried Jevity 1.5, Osmolite, and now Peptamin.  He continues with constant stools, throwing up, and just miserable most of the time.  He can't swallow large pills so they gave him liquid Roxicet for pain.  It makes him throw up and he has terrible nightmares.  Can you tell me of any pain meds that have worked for you.  This cancer is so devastating but we haven't given up yet.

My mother uses Fentanyl patch for pain. It has 50mcg, 75mcg, and 100mcg depending on his level of pain. It stays for 3 days, and then replace with a new one. She used to have vicdin for pain, but it upset her stomach. After we switch to Fentanyl patch, she does not have stomach problem any more. However, every pain killer has some side effects, including nausea, dizzy, constipation etc. So she is taking the stool softner and anti-nausea medicines as well.

I would crush my husbands meds. Combine them all in one. He had a feeding tube. Plus he ended up with a bag that dispensed medicine. Children's liquid motrin I mixed with my 'fairy' concoction.  there is a liquid medication they have out for the nausea,, but he didn't have it at the time.  I am sorry, it is hard on both of you....

I am so sorry to hear of your husband's cancer return and sincerely hope one of the new treatments will eradicate it completely.  I was also very sick from pain meds.  They tried fentynal patch, morphine, and hydrocodone.  While on pain meds the doctor prescribed Zofran and Compozine to try to calm the sickness as the constant wretching made my diaphragm terribly sore and often cause spasms.    I hope they can find something to calm his stomach.  Don't give up.  I was terrified when the doctors told me to stop all medication.  I did stop them and went through awful withdrawal, but the vomiting stopped and the nausea stopped.  At that point I was able to tolerate plain over-the-counter pain meds like super strength tylenol.   Once the J-tube settles in, he may find his discomfort lessens.  I certainly hope so.  God bless you.
