Betttina, so sorry about your brother! It's wonderful that you were there to help. How often to go back? Well, I'd plan on going in about 6-8 weeks, if not sooner. Then he will have finished the radiation and will be in waiting mode before the next MRI that can tell him how he's doing. It is ALL difficult, so having positive kind patient people around is really the best.
Regarding alternative treatments, you could check the Mayo clinic site. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/brain-tumor/DS00281/DSECTIO think they have quite a lot of info. I don't know of any alternative treatments that cure the cancer of GBM but they can support his strength and immune system. Also look into the BUDWIG diet. http://www.healingcancernaturally.com/budwig_protocol_ii.htm
I have heard people say it helps. We tried to eliminate sugar and refined carbohydrates and stay with organic meats and vegetables, but I don't think this is a cure... just a feeling that we do whatever we can to know we tried.
For supplements, my son has taken fish oil, maitake mushrooms, green tea, curcumin, lycopene, propolis, flax oil, and resveratrol, among other things. It is advised that your brother check with his oncologist about compatibility with chemo.
Is he on steroids? Dexamethasone? If so, the goal should be to taper down the dosage to provide comfort but no more than necessary... and keep very slowly tapering. The side effects of the steroids can be a very serious problem.
I hope things go well for him and his family. And that you will find a way to stay in touch. Skype???
All the best,
Sarah
