Is anyone in this clinical trial?

This sounds really promising, does anyone know more than the article mentions?

There is quite a bit of discussion about Novocure on the yahoo message boards about this device.  Check out the brain research and brain temozolomide sections.  I sounds very promising for those who are lucky enough to have access to it.

My husband Tom participated in this trial in Boston (at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Eric Wong) for a couple of months before he was disqualified because of tumor progression. He's a physicist, and was very interested in the science behind the device. Have you been to their website? Here's a link which explains the science -- http://www.novocuretrial.com/science.html -- their site contains alot of information.

Tom's now on a different standard of care - Irinotecan and Avastin - but we're very glad to have had a chance to particpate in the device arm of this trial.

Best of luck - Linda

I have only two -- no three! -- tidbits of info on this device.

1. I have heard of people though this and other boards who were using it... until it failed to prevent recurrence. That is sad news.

2. The pre-eminent NO Dr. Tracy Batchelor at Harvard-Dana Farber told us that he was not involving his hospital in the research because he didn't think there was much hope.

3. My son Andy looked at the images of the tape all over peoples' heads, and the wires running down to the battery pack on their belts, and he said, "Wow, that had better come with a whole lot of promises and other goodies."  I have to agree; it looks like hell to wear. Maybe someday it will be a discreet cap or wig. Who wants to run around town with a head of wires? Of course, I totally get that it beats never running around town again.

My husband said pretty much the same thing when he saw the images.  He already feels like people look at him as some sort of freak...moon face from the dec, hair loss from the radiation, big scar on his head from surgery.  There's no way he wants to walk around with wires and stuff all over his head like "Frankenstein's Monster".  He, too, would want a lot of guarantees.  I guess all viable treatments have to come from somewhere, but for him, his dignity is also important.

Sorry if we're all bursting your balloon, but I agree with the other posters. First, it's very difficult to qualify for Novocure and, secondly, the results have not been stellar. Seems to be no more efficacious than any other treatment, and who wants to wear that thing? As has been said, our quality of life is already altered forever--in some more than others. For the guarantee of a longer life would I submit myself to it? Maybe. Only maybe.
