My husband had dreadful mouth sores when he was on Torisel. You could actually see holes in his tongue and lips and cheeks, and they were so painful he sometimes couldn't eat at all. Several things helped him get through it. One was a "magic mouthwash" prescribed by the oncologist for mouth sores. It has lidocaine in it, and you swish and swallow it and that really helped. If your husband doesn't have this, ask your oncologist because they'll definitely prescribe it for him. Another thing was a mouthwash called Biotene. You can get it over the counter at any pharmacy, even Wal-Mart and Kroger. It is for dry mouth and can be used with mouth sores. Dave said it burns a little sometimes when you use it, but nowhere near like regular mouthwash or toothpaste burned him, and the Biotene made his mouth feel fresh and clean. He also used Anbesol (we used the Wal-Mart store brand which is exactly the same only half the price). It burns like fire when you first put it on the sores, but after about a minute the burning goes away and it deadens the sores enough to allow him to eat. Dave used copious amouts of Anbesol...I don't know what we would have done without it. Like I said, the store brands of this are just as good and a lot cheaper.
The other thing we did when the sores were so intolerable that Dave couldn't eat was I made shakes for him to drink. I used Carnation Instant Breakfast as a base. Our oncologist said this is just as good as Ensure only a lot cheaper. I mixed about 5 heaping spoonfuls of Carnation Instant Breakfast, about 2 cups of milk, and a banana, and blended it in a blender. These tasted so good to Dave, and honestly they kept him alive because he sure couldn't eat anything.
I wish you and your husband the best. My Dave was on Toresel for 8 months, now on Sutent with scans next week. I hope we get good news. I hope your husband does well.
