My mother was supposed to have her chemo as scheduled last week she couldn't because of fear of dehydration and too many bowel movements doctor told her he could do the chemo but the 2 hours one would only give her 4 days to get stronger for the 6 hour one so no chemo that week she had a week off and decided to call the doctor to tell him she had no side effects and would like to come in be checked and possibly get the 2 hours she missed she went everything was fine and he says well I could give you it tomorrow the 2 hours then you have 4 days to get stronger for the 6 hour treatment and I don’t want you to miss the 6 hours so we will give you both next week together ok what I’m not understanding is why now 2 weeks off from chemo and nothings wrong with her she wants to do it isn't 2 weeks off with nothing at all really I bad thing to do i heard interrupting it isn't a good idea and only if you are really sick is when that happens should we go to a different place I’m not sure if I’m comfortable and getting the right answers thanks

Please if you are not comfortable with her doctors get a second openion. Doctors tend to look at any kind of cancer as a death sentence. Don't let them rob you of the little peace of mind that you have. There are so many things envolved in treatment of cancer but doctors see only one side, theirs. Hope is important and anything that threatens that should not be tolerated. If you have read any of my posts you will see just how cruel the attitude of some in the medical profession can be. They see a person only minutes a week. They know nothing about that person except his or her medical reports and often they just skim over them and miss a lot. The patient should always be informed and in charge of their medical decisions. I suggest that you read as much as you can on as many message boards as you can find. That is where you will see the real truth, from the people like you who have been there. I had a very bad experience with doctors and their attitude and it has left a very bitter taste in my mouth for the medical profession. Fear is the enemy but the ones who feed that fear are the executioners. Don't let that happen to you or your loved one. Ask questions and demand answers. If the answers leave you uncomfortable or feeling like you are being brushed off it is time to look for a doctor who can be honest but cmpassionate enough to give hope even if it is a small ray of hope. God bless you and remember you are the one who will have to live with the pain if the treatment does not go right. You don't want to be questioning yourself for the rest of your life. Believe me it is the hardest part of caring for someone with cancer, always asking yourself did I do enough or what should I have done differently. Don't let that happen to you. I have written out my Johnny's story and it shows just what attitude can do both good and bad attitude. If you would like to read it send me your email address and I will see that you get it. I warn you ahead of time it is very detailed and a very upsetting and heartbreaking story. I share it because I don't want anyone else to have to go through what Johnny did and what I am still going through. Best of luck always some day we will find a way to beat not only the cancer but that deadly attitude toward it. Lillian

Hi Patricia
Depending on what chemicals your Mom is receiving the time between infussions is different. My husband was receiving two different chemicals for his chemo. He received one and then waited a week, then he received the second one. He then waited two weeks before the first was started again and thats how it went for months until he finished his treatments.

We were told when he was first diagnosed with cancer that they were going to get in touch with hospice but we are both fighters and got an appointment at Sloan Kettering in New York. It was an expensive trip but well worth it. They said that he should fight his cancer and he has. We have a new doctor now and so far he has lived 7 months longer than he was first told. We don't know how long he has but he still gets around and is enjoying his third grandchild.

Good luck with your mom god bless Susan

Dear Patricia D.,
The one thing that I have learned with dealing with this first hand is to always trust your instincts. If you don't feel comfortablle with the Dr. make a change because at this time in you and your mother's life being uncomfortable with the person giving her care is not an option. I have learned myself that information and now I travel 250 miles to take my treatment every 3 weeks because I don't feel comfortable with the Drs. in my home town.

My husband and I too have made the trip to Slaon Kettering. Our first appointment was today. So far they seem to be on top of things but when I asked about a certain treatment (stereotactic radiation) I was told that is not a good or viable option. How have you found them to be in their treatment towards your husband?
