Hi - hoping to get some advice - we are in Ont. canada & the H1N1 has hit our small community - most people are experiencing common flu like symptoms & bouncing back.  our 5 year old was out of school all last week but is on the mend & my husband Scott who has MM & was DX in Feb. 08 has it too.  He seems to be recovering but has a cough & is spitting up some phlem ( light green/yellow) he had a high fever & gets chilled at night but his appetite was great today - he is just tired.  He has no lung pain & can take a good deep breath.  The er here told me to keep him away because they were so full & people were so sick - they were afraid we would expose him to something worse.  We go to see his hemotologist on Tuesday so I will get some questions answered but are others getting the vacine if they have already had the H1N1 flu?  I am getting mixed answers - some are saying to still get the shot & others are saying it wont't help if you have already had it.  Scott is also to get the flu shot & pneumonia shot - the kids (5 & 7) and I are to get the H1N1 shot & the common flu shot aaauuugghhh.

  Anyway - thanks for any info - Shannon

hello Badger and welcome. There was a note in our paper today saying that the vaccine should not be given to severly compromised persons (like those with serious illnesses.) It was quoting several docs. Myself I think the HINI vaccine is too unkown for compromised patients but that is my take on things. I believe the regular 'flu vaccine is safer.  At this time with his symptoms I would not have one as he is already weak and running a fever What does you oncologist think? sounds like you husband is in need of strong antibiotics. This flu severely affects the lungs and pnuemonia is the quick result. It sounds like your husband is in need of xray and antibiotics, Do not wait insist your husband be seen by someone in the am.... .All the best mms

My doctor has told his cancer patients NOT to get the vaccination for H1N1.   We all need a healthy and strong immune system to fight off all diseases and this vaccine with the toxic preservatives it contains will surely compromise our immunity and do more harm than good. If you have already had the H1N1 flu you will have developed your own natural immunity to it.

There are many natural ways to make sure our immune systems are working at their optimum level and he suggests boosting our vitamin C intake up to 10,000mg daily spread over five doses.

He also recommends boosting our Vitamin D3 to between 3,000IU and 5,000IU daily (spread out as well.)  Our main source of vitamin D is from the sun and we in Ontario have had very little sun for most of the past year so we definitely need to be taking this valuable supplement.  The majority of people living in the Northern Hemispheres test low for Vitamin D.

Also consider Lugol's iodine. "Iodine has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-parasite, anti-cancer and mucus clearing properties. It also has anti-oxidative activity by decreasing free radical formation, protecting nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), proteins (enzymes) and other life-sustaining molecules in your body from oxidative damage. Iodine restores the ability of cells to respond normally to hormones, improves energy production, promotes elimination of toxic heavy metals, including aluminum, cadmium, lead and mercury, and of toxic halide ions, including bromine and fluorine." Suggested dose is up to ten drops daily in juice or water.

  Hope you find this helpful....   Sheila

Hi Shannon,

Firstly I hope hes on antibiotics apprpriate for his probale chest infection?

Thats the most important at this point.

My immunologist recommended if I get swine flu or flu to have antibiotics as a preventative as us myelomics have a problem managing encapsulated bacteria.

I wouldnt consider any vaccinations till the affected family members are better.

Is it possible when well enough for your son and husband to have a test and see if they did have swine flu or ordinary flu?

I can see no point in vaccinating if they have had swine flu as the body should now recognise and be able to deal with this type as they have had it.

It is true anyway that MM's may have vaccination but body doesnt remember the information as we have strange bone marrow.

I hope husband is feeling bit better ,plently of fluids

best wishes

Sue

Good Morning Shannon;

I am getting mixed answers - some are saying to still get the shot.

My local onc and MM specialist both agreed to NOT get the H1N1 flu shot. They both feel that there is not enough information or testing being done to take the chance.

Both said to get the yearly flu shot.

Welcome to the family and hope to hear from you again.

Take care;

Kevin

I had the standard flu shot, but not the H1N1.  Yesterday I was diagnosed with H1N1...has not been a pretty ride so far--yuck.  I'll ask my cancer doc the question and see what he tells me.  Right now I'm leaning towards not getting it.  My immune system is still very much suppressed and will likely take another 6 months to normalize.  I keep a bottle of levaquin on hand because without fail, even a common cold turns to a resp infection with me.  So far it has worked.  I did miss 3 weeks of work in Sept due to fevers which we couldn't determine cause.  I was tested for everything you could imagine...west nile, lyme, CMV, you name it.  I spent one day hiking and the next day I was down for the count.  Guess my point is, with our supressed immune systems, anything can get in there and stir things up...things no one can explain.

I hope your family recovers nicely and can avoid future sickness.  It's been a while since you've updated us on Scott...I hope his MM is in check

Doug

I got the seasonal flu shot and now I was diagnosed with the H1N1 this week.  Was very ill for a couple days but it is getting better with the levequin.  My oncologist recommended not getting the H1N1 vaccine.  Didn't think it would help.
