my brother was diagnosed with stage iv tonsil cancer with 2 lymph nodes affected   hpv16 type   he started chemo on oct 26 and radiation the next day  decided against the surgery and is scheduled for  Cisplatin x 3 with concurrent IMRT x 35, (50 Gy)

the main problem right now is that it is affecting his hearing  which he has now been told is irreversable

has anyone else dealt with this and found a solution?

Hi Maureen,

Sorry about your brother. I too had Cisplatin and now, 4 years later, still have tinitus and some hearing loss. Unfortunately it will be this way forever as far as I know and is one of the changes that have become my new normal. Small price to pay for the results I've had with treatment.

Good Luck!

Joe

What Joe said.  I really don't notice it much anymore.  I tried hearing aids and they seemed to help, but were a PITA.  I turned them in after the trial period.

Me too!  3.5 years out and have learned to live with it,  had tonsil CA left neck desection on the left side and have more hearing loss on the right ear.  What gets me sometimes is it pops every now and then, gets clogged up, so I rinse with salt/baking soda rinse and it clears out!!!  As far as I understand, this is the way it is!  I love being here today, God Bless all and enjoy Life!

My husband received cisplatin nearly 2 years ago and recently has been complaining of tinnitus-has anyone noted this problem starting this long after chemo ended?

I had Stage III tonsil SCC (HPV-16) with one lymph node involved. I had Cisplatin and rads; about halfway through my treatment I noticed I wasn't hearing so well.

My docs at Johns Hopkins sent me to one of their audiologists, who did a hearing test and found significant hearing loss in my left ear and slightly less in my right. Thing is, I went to one too many concerts by The Who -- "the Loudest Rock 'n' Roll Band in the World" -- back in the day. I also am a hunter and shoot a lot, and (stupidly) never wore hearing protection.

So, the audiologist was unable to say for sure what caused my hearing loss, but that it's probably a combination of all of the above. I'm told that it is irreversible, regardless of what caused it. But hey, I'm alive, right? I'll take that any old day.

My husband had 35 rad sessions, Eributex, and Cisplatin as well and has pretty much lost all hearing in his ears; the one wit the main tumor is the worst.  He tried earing aids, but they did not work well.  I bought him some wireless headphones from Brookstone for about $50 and he is able to enjoy tv with out making me deaf!

Because of the potential for hearing loss, my doctor had ordered an auditory exam before starting treatment and changed me from Cisplatin to Erbutex.  As he explained, all the drugs have side effects, but he did not want to be responsible for my hearing loss.
