Positive PET but Negative Biopsy ?

 Hi,

(Patient:M 27-Ewing's Sarcoma dx 2008 & completed treatment by jan09)

Just after completion of treatment for the first time on 7-mar-09 i went through PET scan and it showed a metabolic activity at previous surgery site. (SUV-5).On 7-dec-09 i went through PET Scan again during this time also it showed positive result (with SUV-6.2). size of the light up area has almost doubled in 9 months. I went through Biopsy to get it confirmed and what i found was Totally Negative Result. which say absolutely normal cartilage.

Can it be possible that PET shows positive result and in actual/biopsy its not ?

I am going for another biopsy now.  just to confirm that sample is taken properly under CT guidance. Please throw your opinions.

Yes, lots of PET scans give false positives.

Eating the wrong foods the day prior to a PET scan can give false positives. I learned that the hard way... :-)

Wait? What foods were eaten that caused a positive on the pet scan? My husband just had one done a week ago and it came back that he has 5 hot spots all suspected for cancer in 5 different areas of his body. The oncologist told us "its bad, very bad" but the only test done was the pet scan. He hasn't any biopsies done to further determine if he does have cancer in these 5 areas or not.

Someone please give me a glimmer of hope that maybe just maybe the pet scan was wrong!!! Please???

People here can only guess at questions on PET scans. People here can and do accurately relate their personal experiences. But there are a lot of problems related to PET scans. First question many times is why are they doing a PET scan? Accurate PET scans require considerably more experience. They produce nuclear waste. They cost twice as much as a CT scan. Many hospitals will not do a PET unless there has been established a true necessity for PET over CT. There are some hospitals that try to dabble in nuclear medicine without adequately trained personnel. Every case is different but some progression will show on scans done after radiation due to scaring caused by radiation. As scar tissue grows it appears as progression. This is where skill and experience for scan results come into play. So yes there is room for hope. PET scans have positive readings for many reasons that have nothing to do with the spread of cancer.

I recently had a PET scan and it came back that my head and neck showed lots of hots but the doctor couldn't find any indications of cancer. I had cancer of the tonsils in Jan. of 2009 and went through surgery and radiation and the radiation did a lot of damage to my throat. I am also a insulin diabetic and had to eat more carbs than I was supposed to plus I drank 3 beers the night before the teats which they scheduled for the afternoon. They told me it was OK to eat 6 hrs before the teast but I actually ate 5 hrs before nad more carbs again to offset the insulin. My gluclose was dropping while they were prepping me for the test and got low the the lady doing the test gave me apple juice just 10 minutes after injecting me with the chemical that attaches it self to the cancer or gluclose. Since the doctor could find no indication of cancer I am sure the test came back false because of all the things I ate and drank. what are the odds that the test is false. I had a blood draw on Mondat and my primary doctor will be reading them when I see him this coming Monday. I have called the U of Az about the second opinion and also the history of what I ate and drank before the test and they said to wait till the doctor reads the blood test to see what my white blood cell count says. I know that if it is high than it is fighting off something which most likely would be cancer and if it is not high then I am OK . Any replies would be appreciated. I feel great and think the test was false due to my eating and drinking and the apple juice. Aloha,Wildog
