Pancreatic Cancer - chemo & AHCC

Hello all my name is David and i've posted a few messages to the forums since august i believe.  If anyone has remembered any of my posts I discussed my fathers condition.  In brief my father was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in july.  My father was very symptomatic (zero appetite, discomfort in the abdomen, loss of energy, bed ridden, depressed, multiple infections, all these symptoms aggrevated even more with chemo)

My father was and still is getting treatment @ St. Vincents medical center in the west village in NYC by Oncologist Dr. Sullivan.  My fathers hepatobilliary specialist is Dr. Raccuia; also as St. Vincents.  Before my father started chemo he wasn't doing good and during chemo he wasn't doing well at all either.  My father was NO LONGER A CANDIDATE for whipple procedure because the cancer had already spread from pancreas to small intestine, and Omentum (fatty pad) which is a layer of fat that lines the organs in the abdomen.

Again my father was not doing well at all ..the chemo made my father feel even worse ...my father was ONLY getting GEMCITABINE (GEMZAR) which most of you know by now ... is pretty much ONLY  pallative chemo ...meaning (most likely it wont do anything alone but its done just to make the patient feel as if they're doing something).

After about 2 weeks my father already accepted his fate...he already discussed his funeral arrangements etc..

One night i happened to discover a natural store on 64th st near columbus circle by the name of westerly natural farm.  Initially i was looking at pancreatic enzymes but the kind gentleman told me that it wasn't a good idea to buy it before consulting a my fathers oncologist.  I asked the man if he had heard of RED REISHI MUSHROOM (my mother was brewing the tea from the whole mushroom imported from japan) he stated that he did and that he knew of 2 friends who had stage 4 ovarian and cervical cancer and both of them went to remission while they were using another medicinal mushroom called AHCC (active hexose correlated compound)  he told me that i could come in on that following monday to speak to a naturopathic dr but explained that most likely she was going to recommend AHCC and FERMENTED SOY AND CURCUMIN ....he told me that he would give me a discount and told me to just try it and see how my dad would react to it and if anything i could always come back and keep the product and he would give me a refund OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET.

So I gave my father the pills but i found out that he wasn't taking it because he didn't really believe in the supplements.  I explained to my father what the AHCC was purportley used for and then my father began to take it (please do some research on AHCC and its purported uses).  Literally within a few days i started realizing my father was getting out of bed and staying out of bed for longer durations...days later he started eating a little without us urging him too.  week later his appetite became better and better....he started to eat more and more and his energy level was a little better.  This was roughly around mid august....prior to me giving him AHCC my father was geting flu like symptoms ( most likely from having a suseptible immune system ..further compromised by chemo)

It happened to be the off week where my father had a break from chemo when i started giving him the AHCC (6 - 500mg pills a day) My father had always felt terrible after the 3-4 hour rounds of chemo.  So i sorta wanted to gauge what it would do to help because apparently AHCC was supposed to HELP DEAL WITH THE EFFECTS OF CHEMO (nausea, loss of appetite etc..)  To my surprise my father said that he reported no discomfort ....and since then my father hasn't felt any symptoms with discomfort at all.

My father used to goto chemo with a cane and us bracing him with each step .  I discussed with Dr. Sullivan that we were giving him medicinal mushrooms in dietary supplement forms and natural form (AHCC PILL FORM / RED REISHI IN PILL AND NATURAL FORM ) as well has MARIJUANA (yes MARIJUANA!!)  ...Dr. Sullivan stated that he had never heard of RED REISHI nor AHCC.  But stated that it seemed harmless and that he couldn't reccomment but has reported that Marijuana did in fact help .  (its illegal of course)

As the weeks continued to fly by Dr. Sullivan started seeing my father walk in on his own strength without a cane and he told us that my father looked great and seemed to have more energy.  Around the the middle of sept right before my birthday we were all nervous as a family because my father had his follow up PET SCAN ...I knew my father was doing great but pancan just makes you very pessimistic.....we were all very much pleased when Dr. Sullivan asked us what we were doing for our father because his cancer in all the areas it metastised to were gone...no traces of cancer in Omentum or small intestine.  Thats when he explained to us that my fathers chemo was only PALLATIVE and that he really didn't expect to yield these results.

He then suggested my father take on a more aggressive course of chemo in which he incorporated TARCEVA to my fathers tx.  I've done alot of research on Tarceva and it does have harsh side effects....my father has been taking tarceva now for close to 2 months and i can tell you that this AHCC MUST BE DOING SOMETHING because my father gets very very mild rashes but other then that nothing.

I AM NOT SAYING THAT AHCC WILL CURE ANY PANCREATIC CANCER....I WILL SAY THAT MY FAMILY AND I WITNESSED WHAT MY FATHERS CONDITION WAS LIKE BEFORE GIVING HIM AHCC.....ITS BEEN MONTHS SINCE MY FATHER REPORTED ANY DISCOMFORT...MY FATHER HAS NOT EVEN HAD A BOUT WITH A COLD OR ANYTHING (which he routinely had before even being diagnosed)

My father was very greatful and was a little depressed but nevertheless he was very content with life and he stated many times over and over that he NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT HIS CANCER REALLY.    My father just came back from california from a vacation and hes walking , talking , eating almost as if he were never sick.  My father has constipation problems but that was a result of colon cancer over 20 years ago.

I asked my father yesterday how he feels and he told me he felt great and that he thinks the cancer is gone.

I work at Beth Israel Medical center in brooklyn so i am familiar with traditional tx for cancers.

I take alot of pride in treating everyone whos sick like they're my family because i know what its like.  I wrote all of this today in hopes that i could give somewhat of a thorough timeline of my fathers journey thus far.

I really urge everyone to give AHCC  a shot .  the brand i've been buying my father is by quality of life labs KINOKO GOLD 500mg .  You can find it at natural supplement stores for upwards of 75.00 but buy it from the web for half the price.  I buy mine at iherb.com .  Do your research on AHCC...they mention it on sloan kettering website as well as many government biotechnology websites as well.

These are awesome results and I really hope that your dad is feeling better and better! If you are in Nyc, you could also confer for 2nd opinion with Dr. Fine in Columbia who has been having great successes with many patients.

I am intrigued by what you say and don't doubt it,as I take mushroom supplements also. My mom's oncologist said not to take it with chemo, as they are not sure of the interaction and if it will harm. This drives me crazy,as we want to build immunity, but I am scared to go against his orders. So glad it is working for your dad. Ask your docs if they think GTX will help your dad. Best of luck to you!

Hi David

My dad has stage 4 lung cancer.  It has metastasized to the liver and brain.  He is doing chemo and 10 days of whole brain radiation.  I have been giving him AHCC since his diagnosis but was told not to during chemo.  Did your father take it while doing chemo or would he stop a few days before. I give him 2 pills a day.  Should I increase amount?

Thank you for the info.  My sister has decided to go off Tarceva and Gemzar for her Stage IV pancreatic cancer.  I have been praying for some ray of hope for her.  She began her inital battle 2 years ago with a Whipple for stage one.  She is young (49) and healthy so I will see if she will try the AHCC.

Dr. Burt Berkson has successfully treated terminal pancreatic cancer patients with the gentle, low cost, no negative side effect protocol of low dose naltrexone/alpha lipoic acid.    I urge you to research the following for your sister.
LDN has been approved by the FDA for many years and though this is an off label use it is also being prescribed with good results for a variety of cancers and other diseases such as multiple sclerosis, parkinsons, crohns to name just a few.
Following are a few links with information related to pancreatic cancer.

I pray this will be the answer for her situation.

I have tried three times tonight to post this message with links to information about Dr. Berkson and the successful outcomes but the messages would not post and I am presuming it is because of the links.  If you do a Google search on   THE LONG TERM SURVIVAL OF A TERMINAL PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENT    or even on Dr. Burt Berkson and Low dose naltrexone I'm sure you will find good research.  There is also reliable information on the PubMed site so a Google there should bring you many good results as well.

If this does not work for you please send me a private message.  If you are comfortable doing so it would be a good idea to include your e mail address since the moderator's may not pass my private messages either if they contain links.  They have explained they are experiencing some technical problems.

Best regards
