My husband has esophageal cancer; he has undergone chemo/radiation, then surgery, now is back on chemo for 12 weeks. Nothing we had read on the internet had given us much hope of a long life after this, but we went to a support group last month and met people who are 13, 10, 8 year survivors, which was such a positive thing. It is not easy, life will never be the same, but it is possible to go on living. The people in the group worked and traveled, and had learned to manage lots of small meals during the day, which is something we are working on now (my husband is still using his feeding tube for most of his nutrition).
If your brother can find a support group, and join in even before he starts treatment, that probably would be beneficial. Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, where my husband had surgery, has an esophageal support group. Perhaps your oncologist can help locate one, or the American Cancer Society or CancerCare (I've not used those resources but I've heard CancerCare can provide a lot of info).
Best of luck to your brother and to all who will be with him on his journey.
