I was recently diagnois with carcinoid tumor in the stomach and metastatic to the liver and a spot next to the spleen. The surgeon feels it to be in my best interest to have stomach surgery and lymph nodes removed. also burn the metastatic spots out of the liver with radiation. I am concern about the out come and long term effects. I am other wise health and a active 58 yr. old male. The surgeon wants to start me on shots 3 times a day for now for treatment of flushing, stomach discomfort and some occasional diahrea. Has anybody had this procedure? I am being treated at the NNMC in Bethesda.

I don't know anything about the stomach surgery, but I have had metatastic tumors burned from my liver using RFA (radio frequency ablation). I was only sore for a couple of days afterwards. Just make sure if they open you up to do it, they protect all of your other organs. A surgeon accidentally got too close to my esophagus and burned a hole in it because she didn't protect it. It has caused me more problems than cancer ever did.

Lee. Sorry to hear your news on the diagnosis. My father-in-law was diagnosed over 16 months ago. They found it very late stage...he was not a candidate for surgury, but went through Chemoembolization in Ohio State & SIRT SPHERES in NC.

I am not a doctor, but there are support groups for Carciniod patients that can help you sift through all of your options.  What I learned was don't count on your oncologist to know all the answers. You need to be very aggressive with your research. I would be happy to send you all that I have.
