On Feb. 24, 2010 my husband had 64 seeds implanted in his prostate to treat prostate cancer.  After the initial discomfort from the procedure passed, he had one or two discomfort free days.  Since about Wednesday, March 3  he has had increasing discomfort.  First fatigue, nausea and back and chest pain and then between midnight and daylight of March 5, he developed diahrea and had 3 BM's. He called his urologist and he said to discontinue taking the antibiotic, Levaquin which he did.   This urologist was going to renew his Pyridium prescription but never faxed it to our pharmacy.  When I went to pick up on March 6, they had no faxed prescription.  Therefore, my husband called the urologist office again.  The doctor on call that day said he felt my husband may be having a reaction to the Pyridium also and therefore advised him not to take any more medication...not even Ibuprofen and see how he felt.  The next morning he was not as nauseous and felt some improvement.   But since then he has had increasing discomfort in the internal anal area and rectum.   His radiation oncologist referred him to his gastroenterologist who diagnosed the problem as radiation proctititis.  The gastro doctor scoped his rectum yesterday, March 26, and says my husband has severe radiation burns in the anal canal and rectum which are swollen and ulcerated.  He prescribed Belladonna Opium suppositories which help to mask the pain.  Is there anything which will speed the growth of new skin ?

This doctor also gave him some information on radiation proctitis from University of Maryland Medical Center which talks about the successful use of acupuncture for radiation proctititis.

Has anyone had success with acupuncture for radiation protititis ?

Anyone else with success stories using any other methods of treatment for this condition ?

I found a French abstract that had a 96% success rate, success rate is defined as improving 2 grades. I decided to try it and it worked for me. The abstract suggests 2 enamas a day one in the morning another at night of Carafate Suspension 20ml of 10%. It is normally used for ulcers, it makes sense if it works for the beginning of the digestive system it would work at the end of it.

Hope this helps

Dan

Dan,

Thank you for your reply.

Was this abstract you speak of used for radiation burns of the anal canal and rectum ?

It was used for radiation burns of the lower bowel intestine, I had major rectal bleeding from external beam raditation and it healed it. I am sure it would be effective for the anal canal also.

Hi littlemom I have read of a patient talking about Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT) it used among other things to heal radiation burn cause from cancer treatment so I know it will help him you have to do a search in your local area all the best Ray Randall

 HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY

Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT) is a type of oxygen therapy that causes a rise in the body's blood plasma oxygen content. This results in enhanced oxygen delivery to the tissues, brain and organs of the body. With this therapy, additional oxygen can be dissolved in the blood plasma and go directly into tissues. It promotes relaxation, increases stamina and endurance, stimulates the body's own healing processes and helps to return to a state of balance and wellbeing.

PURPOSE

Oxygen is essential for life. It is involved with all body's vital functions, and we require a continual supply of oxygen to survive. The brain, which makes up about two percent of our total body mass, requires over twenty percent of the body's oxygen needs. Ninety percent of the energy produced by the body comes from oxygen alone and only the remaining ten percent comes from the food we eat. Bacteria, parasites, toxins, and viruses all have one thing in common – none can survive in an oxygen rich environment.

Systems in the body can easily be thrown out of balance if the oxygen uptake is weak or deficient. Perhaps the most important factor in oxygen deficiency is atmospheric pollution. Automobile exhaust, factory emissions and planetary deforestation are the greatest causes of lowered oxygen content in the air we breathe. At the same time, foods that have been processed, cooked and preserved through canning tend to be very low in oxygen content. High fat foods like meat, eggs and dairy products tend to be lower in oxygen as well.

Oxygen deficiency is often overlooked, and therefore, it is not seen as a cause for many symptoms and diseases. Some of the symptoms associated with imbalances in the flow of oxygen within the body include premature aging, depression, anger, sadness, fatigue, dullness and sluggishness. However, when poor oxygenation is chronic, our overall immune response to germs and viruses is weakened, making us vulnerable to a wide range of diseases.

In 1966, Nobel Prize winner Dr Otto Warburg confirmed that the key precondition for the development of cancer is a lack of oxygen on the cellular level.

Some of the reasons that individuals will seek mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy include allergies, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, circulatory problems, acid stomach, stress, headaches, migraines, eczema, psoriasis, sports injuries and sleeping disorders.

This type of oxygen therapy has also been found useful in assisting people with diabetic complications, impaired lung capacity, heart disease, as well as cancer patients, patients recovering from plastic or cosmetic surgery, and patients suffering from stroke, Alzheimer, Parkinson, brain dysfunctions and  HIV-related disorders.

Finally, mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy is believed to enhance performance in physical exercise and competitive athletics. Hyperbaric chambers were widely used in the former Soviet Union, East Germany and other socialist countries. In the West, some of the professional sports teams utilise chambers in their training rooms.

Oxygen is our source of life. The more oxygen we are able to enjoy, the more we can partake of life itself.

HEALTH BENEFITS:

  • Provides greater overall energy, strength and endurance
  • Calms the mind and relieves built-up tension and stress
  • Heightens concentration, alertness and memory
  • Detoxifies the blood and supports the immune system
  • Promotes healing and counters aging
  • Strengthens the heart and the lungs
  • Provides a natural remedy for headaches and  migraines
  • Relieves altitude discomfort and jetlag
  • Assists digestion and raises metabolism
  • Reduces fatigue and creates better sleeping patterns
  • Relieves muscle stiffness and supports pre-athletic performance
  • Speeds up recovery after physical exercise
  • Improves skin conditions and assists in the disappearance of cellulite

Is it Safe?

Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy is completely safe. The mild hyperbaric chamber uses filtered ambient air, so there is no risk of oxygen toxicity to the body even with regular use. The chamber can be depressurized and opened from the inside. Once inside the chamber, both visual and verbal communication is possible with our outside attendant. No dangerous side effects have been reported with mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Are there any contraindications?

There are a few contraindications to be aware of when considering mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy and they include: ear canal problems or an ear infection, pregnancy, glaucoma, and flu or cold symptoms. Additionally, you should not enter the chamber if you are inebriated (drunk), or if you are wearing perfume or cologne.

Thank you Ray.........my husband is scheduled to begin HBOT as soon as he can be put on their schedule. We are being told it will involve about 40 treatments....5 times a week for 8 weeks. We are hopeful. Littlemom

HI,

I had seeds and also had radiation issues. the Hyperbaric chamber worked for me. I had gross hematuria (bleeding with urination) and moderate to sever pain with urination. The people at the chamber wanted me to to do 40 treatments at $2000 per treatment. Even with my co-pay lots of $ from me. I went out of town after 9 treatments and I never resumed since all symptoms are gone. I would ask your Dr at the University to print out some double blind studies of acupuncture treating radiation cystitis. If he cannot do that change Doctors.
