Hi, yes my Mother got rectal bleeding while on treatment. This is her story so far.
My Mother had a burst colon due to cancer in 2003 she then had an emergency operation to remove the cancer followed by chemo, then in Feb 04 she had a clear colon but the cancer had moved to her liver, she had 2/3rd of her liver removed and then November 2004 it had gone to her lungs (40 tumors in each lung, v small), she was offered a clinical trial here in Ireland a combination of Avastin, Oxaliplatin and Xeloda which she was handling quite well until she started to bleed from the back passage and then she was rushed into hospital with 3 clots in her left leg. They cannot operate because of the Avastin and bleeding and wound healing etc. She is on an injection twice a day of clexane, A blood thinner but a very low dose as it could cause her to bleed internally because of the Avastin. That will not reduce the clot but will prevent another clot forming. She was given 6 months to live in November 04 (she is still here 1yr and 3mths later,tk God)and was taken off all medication so her last dose of Avastin, Oxaliplation and Xeloda was in Feb 05.The bleeding stopped about 5mths after stopping the treatment but has come back again since Christmas. She had severe abdominal pain in early January and the Doctor thinks the cancer may have come back in her colon, so she is waiting on results of a ct on her colon and a barium enema, she will get them on Wednesday(two days time)She now gets out of breath after walking up hill/fast and has a cough. She has pain in her colon and cannot eat alot before feeling full and tight in her abdomin.
So I guess I am saying yes my Mum had the bleeding too but she was also on other drugs (Oxaliplation and Avastin) at the time.
I hope all is ok with your dad. My Mum was very distressed with the bleeding and always has a soft stool but the soft stool was put down to having the part of the colon that absorbs water removed, therefore the stool would be softer. It was odd that my mother was bleeding and clotting at the same time?? The clotting was maybe the Avastin/cancer and the bleeding the Xeloda? Once your Dads bloods stay good then the bleeding is not causing him a problem blood wise. My Mum never found out what is causing the bleeding, she had a scope and they could not see anything but were afraid to go too far because she was on the blood thinning injections!!
Which cancer is your Dad treating with Xeolda?
