My dad was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer.  He now found out he has mets to brain and liver.  He has had one chemo cycle (Vinorelbine/Cisplatin) and will do whole brain radiation for 2 weeks.  Can someone give me some input on this and can you survive a long time when it has metastasized like this.  Thank you for any info.  I greatly appreciate it.

I don't think it will surprise you if I told you that it is not a good diagnosis. People do beat it though.

The drs. found a grapefruit sized non-small cell lung cancer tumour in my wife in 2003. They surgically removed it and then in 2006 found that it had metastisized to her brain. She had ten days of whole brain radiation and one day of stereotactic radiation. We have been told to get her affairs in order so many times that it does not mean anything anymore. She even spent a full year in hospice when they thought that she was in her final weeks.

She is still here today though and functioning quite well. There are many people with many beleifs on what the miracle cure is - but here is one more to add to the list. Use the power of positive thinking. Whether or not it works (and we do believe that it does) at the very least it will make whatever time is left on earth much more bearable.

My wife is the exception to the rule but proof that there always is hope.

Best of luck to you and your Dad.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me.  You truly are a loving husband. I'm so happy your wife is doing well and I pray she will continue to do well and beat this.  I was just wondering is your wife  doing any sort of 'maintenance' now or does she take any supplements?  My dad is currently doing whole brain radiation for 10 days and then will resume chemo.  Did your wife have any side effects from the radiation?

There was a recent clinical trial using much more focused radiation dubbed Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SRBT) in JAMA (March 17, 2010 303(11) 1170).  You may want to see what your doctor thinks of this new technique or find a center in your city that has the technology.
