stage IV squamous cell carcinoma...

My 73 year old Dad was just recently diagnosed with stage IV squamous cell carcinoma that has spread to his lungs. The doctor believes it stems from a skin cancer as Dad has a history of numerous skin cancers.  Is there anybody out there that has been through this or knows someone who has? Dad will be going for his follow-up appointment (after having an open biopsy) next week to discuss treatment options. Everything I have been reading on SCC doesn't sound very promising...but we are a family of faith and are praying for the best! Please share any information you may have...we desperately need it.  Thank you!

Hello - originally the Dr. asked Rob about a place on his face that had been removed many years ago - he said that SCC sometimes originates there.  Rob's primary was BOT - he has been through 10 chemos and 37 radiations.  He is doing well - his was Stage IV - we know that the next path was the lungs - thankfully and prayerfully we have not had that!  I do know that is the path for throat cancer.  We just don't think about that and "Breath, put one foot in front of the other, and live each day to the fullest."  That is my motto and I think I took that from Sarah!  God bless you and your family.

My husband, Bart was diagnosed with stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma. It was Base of Tongue primary, like Cheryl's hubby, with nearly the same treatment. He had surgery first to remove the primary tumor as well as 60+ lymph nodes (4 cancerous) during the neck dissection surgery in Oct, 09. He is 72. His and Cheryl's husband's type of cancer is highly "curable" ~ over 80%, even with Stage 4.

Has your Dad seen an ENT? had an MRI  to try to pinpoint the primary tumor? Is there lymph node involvement? What were his symptoms? What type of Dr. made the diagnosis?

I, too have a strong faith and will add you and your Dad & family to my daily prayers for healing as well as wisdom for you and the docs as you explore all the options. Be sure to get the best doctors at the best hospitals you possibly can. Also a 2nd opinion.

I don't know much about lung cancer, perhaps you can post on that site also.

You've come to a wonderful site, full of patient/warriors/survivors, caregivers, and some nurses and docs, who are kind, compassionate, and willing to share their experiences, strength, and hope. Above all, they are honest and encouraging and will do their very best to help! Cancer is not the death sentence it once was!

My husband was also just diagnosed with Stage IV SCC. Yesterday he had a PET scan and today the doctor called. He has a spot on his lung that they are not real worried about right now. They are very concerned about a section of his spine. So Sunday he is scheduled for an MRI to see if the cancer has spread there.

Coincidentally he just had a biopsy for a possible melanoma. We are still waiting for the result. My husband had a squamous cell skin cancer removed last year about this time.

Please let us know how the appointment turns out and what the treatment is. I am particularly interested since my husband seems to be following a similar pattern.

Keep praying. God will help you get through this.

My mother has been clear of cancer for 9 months now. When she was first diagnosed it was with scc stage IV but they still have no idea where her primary spot is. There is a spot on her lungs that they are watching very carefully but do not believe that they have to worry about it right now. She had cancer in over 20 lymphnodes in her neck and they also removed her tonsils but did not find anything.
