Can a CT Scan detect Ovarian Cancer?

I went to the Urgent Care clinic because of cold and flu symptoms. I explained to the doctor that I was diagnosed with diverticulitis last year during a colonoscopy and that I wasn't sure if it was the flu or a flare up of the diverticulitis. So he sent me to the hospital for a CT scan. Less then 30 minutes after I got home he called me and said they found a 9cm mass on my right ovary and that it was cancer. I can't remember the exact name he said...ovarian something or other but that it meant cancer. Can they really tell it's cancer just by a CT scan?

While it can't detect it,it can see it> Unfortunately it is in a Later stage, you need to see an OB/GYN/ONC Fast. Exp if what he said was either Ovarian Carcinosarcoma, or MMMT. This is a Very Rare and Aggressive Form of Cancer.

Thank you for your response. I go back to see the Dr at Urgent Care this afternoon. I will be taking a notebook and a tape recorder with me. He told me if I don't have an ob/gyn that he can refer me to one. I also think I'm going to call the Mayo clinic here in AZ and see if I can get in with them. This really scares me. I'm worried because my husband is a kidney dialysis patient as well as other major chronic health issues and is in a wheelchair. I'm just not sure how I'm going to cope with all this and take care of his needs too.

I don't want to scar you but if this is the same Canceras my Mary Has , don't wast any time, if it has shown up on a CT it is Advance.

My Mary was Dx with Ovarian Carcinosarcoma IIIc and a secondary Primary Brest Cancer stage 1 on 03/29/06. During the 8-.5hr surgery to remove a 18c x 11c x7c tumor they also found that it had invaded her Colón.. After chemo of Cisplatin ever 3 week for 6 rounds  her CA 125 was <5 it never was over 35. Before starting Chemo she had a Lumpectomy on her Brest and a port placed in her Right Shoulder.

It has now been 49 months since she was Dx and she is doing Grate. The OB/GYN/ONC said that he couldn’t Feel or see anything at all. The CA125 have stayed below 7 all this time.

. If you could see her you would not know that she had this Beast. So never give up HOPE While it can’t be cured it can be stopped.
I Give thinks daily for Our Blessing , in Feb 2006 we didn't know if we were going to see our 35 anv let alone 4 more Christmas.

We both Know that she is Pushing all Limits of Survival right now but as Long as we are together and she is Well we have HOPE,

I had atypical medulary carcinoma w/ multi foci and lymph node involvement in 1992 at the age of 37. I only had a 20% chance of surviving and the dr's had told my husband i had about 6 months to a year. Here it is just 3 weeks shy of being 18 years cancer free. I have been on the phone all morning trying to get in to see my primary care dr. I have an appt already scheduled for May 25th that I made 3 weeks ago for my yearly check up. I'm trying to get in sooner, but so far no one has returned any of my phone calls. I am on a program through my husband's VA insurance and trying to get me in is time consuming. I have to see my primary care dr first so they can refer me to any specialist I will need to see. I have been on the phone all morning leaving messages trying to get them to move my appt. up to this week or maybe next week on an urgent basis but so far no one has returned any of my phone calls. I mean it's only 2 weeks but then I will have to wait for the referral to go see a specialist which could mean another 2 weeks? I don't know. I just want to get this ball going with my primary care team and not have to depend an Urgent Care Walk-In clinic to get things going.   Come on phone....ring...darn it.

Monday is the worst day to make phone calls. Do you have their fax number? If so, type something out saying you were at urgent care and the date, were sent to the hospital for a CT scan & that less then 30 minutes after you got home; you were called that they found a 9cm mass on your right ovary and they said it was (insert medical term here).

Then say you tried calling all morning to get your appointment moved asap; the phone was busy. Explain that you need to see him to get the referral to see the specialist so that you can get treated right away.

Then sign it something like I await your phone call; leave your house & cell number. Make sure you make the letter/fax look as professional as possible; with the date (you can add the time), your name, address & if you have a patient number.

Hopefully by now you've called Mayo as well as an oncology GYN.

Mayo ovarian cancer http://www.mayoclinic.org/ovarian-cancer/ there is a request appointment on this page - also look at patient stories a Dr. Wilson is mentioned in one; and in the other it says - C. Robert Stanhope, M.D., a gynecologic oncologist at Mayo Clinic, describing him as "the best."
