bad rectal pain after colostomy reversal

About 2 years ago I had a colostomy reversal. It was an end colostomy and I had half my rectun removed. The doctors joined me back together using stitches and surgical staples.

I have to be careful what I eat and should avoid foods with skins and indigestible or stringy flesh coz they can really bung me up. The scar tissue in my rectum has thickened and hardened and I have slight radiation burns to the inside of my rectum I now wish I had kept the bag as I go through phases when I get constipated and then get fecal impaction which leads to excruciating rectal pain.

I take all sorts of things to keep me regular such as Fybogel, Movicol, enemas, suppositories and have just got some pain killing ointment.

I have discussed all this with my consultant and said I am thinking I would like my bag back! But he is not too keen on doing this. He was not too keen on reversing it in the first place so he will probably change his mind this time too if I ask often enough! He says I would have to be reall really bad to want to have the colostomy bag put back. I do feel really really bad! I dont want to spend the rest of my life living in the toilet! I feel my life revolves around toilets.

Has anyone else had a colostomy/ileostomy reversal and then wishes they hadnt?

Brainstorming:  Maybe there are medical techniques to improve your existing state-improve the procedure-do a follow-up surgery instead of asking for the bag......I am not in your section but intuitively that is the direction I  would earnestly and diligently explore first with 2nd and 3rd opinions....Good luck-sorry about the pain-man, that is tough stuff-I am sorry you are going thru this and can't blame ya but maybe there is another way......research the country....talk to the very best surgeons....Dave  Oudave83

My husband has the same problem with the exception of, he never had a bag. He's having a hard time adjusting too. He's tried everything just like you. It's discouraging. He knows what he can't eat, but he still spends hours in the bathroom. We're confused and frustrated too.

Yeah i am only six months down the track after my reversal but i'm stuck at home, lost my job, have to take Oxycontin and gaberpentin to control pain issues.  I have to really be careful with what i eat, i suffer real agony passing even small stools other side effects such as release of wind without control and the resulting smell have my family staying their distance at times. I'm going to give it another six months and if there is no significant improvement i want my bag back. At least i had some quality of life with the bag and had more control than i have now.

Good Luck Alex

Oh my!!!

I was focusing so much on getting my reversal.  My consultant said she wouldn't do it until I lost over 35 lbs and stopped smoking.  I've just managed after a year to lose the weight, but I'm still smoking.

After reading about the uncontrollable wind and the pain, not to mention the risks of the operation, I'm not sure I want it any more.  I thought my uncontrollable wind would be fixed after the operation.  I wish my doctors and consultants explained more to me.  If I go for this reversal there will be no going back.  I'm so confused now.

Can someone tell me if immediately after the Hartmaans reversal you can still control your bowels, or does it just run out.  I can't imagine having much control over a muscle I haven't used for such a long time?

My husband has the same thing.   Its been 10 months since his illestomy reversal.   Our doctor prescribed Lactulose for him, along with Benefiber and prune juice in the AM.   Miralax with Benefiber at night and a small dose of the Lactulose.   This is all to prevent constipation.   He still has very bad days of pain and pressure and going all the time but still feeling pressure like something is always there needing to go.   His doctor told him this is all due to the rectal surgery and he will have to find a way to live with it.  I hated the bag and so did he so I hope these things we are trying will ward off the constipation and help give more good than bad days.
