Severe upper abdominal pain

Anyone else have episodes of severe upper abdominal pain (right below the sternum) that radiates to the back (behind the sternum) and radiates under the right rib cage?

Stage 3b carcinoid cancer patient.  All scans are clear.  If you can name the scan, I've had it.  We can't seem to determine the source of the pain.  It's getting worse.  I'm losing my appetite most days.  i'm on oxycodone for the pain.  They can't find any gall stones.  Pancreas enzyme levels are normal.  Everything keeps showing up "normal".  But there's obviously something wrong.

I am having the same issue with lower abdominal pain with gallbladder type symptoms but I don't have a gallbladder.  Been to 2 hospitals and all the tests come back normal. I am thinking of going to the Mayo as the doctors here can't find anything. They have me on pain pills but that's not a long term solution. Please let me know if they find anything. Mine started about 3 weeks after 6 month of Erbitux treatment (3rd time on chemo).

I recently went to Mayo hoping to get answers about Carcinoid.I was very disappointed.I think stressing sympyoms ,suspcions, and observations is very important .Do not sit back and let the charts & Xrays from home make your case for you .Make the Mayo Dr listen to you not a letter from your Dr at home. The Dr young from mayo read my tests from home and the letter and made his opinion and never considered symptoms .I returned with no answers, extermely disappointed.

The last couple of times I've had attacks of severe pain, it's been going through to my back - right behind my sternum.  I feel like I've been shot through my stomach and out my back.

I'm sorry to hear you haven't received any new answers.

Hi,

My husband went through the same thing. For months he went to different drs. They eventually found, by mistake, that he had a tumor right next to his spine. I hope that's not the case with you, but you might want to check into it.

Symtoms sould like my dads recently. He went for his monthly injection and found out he had a urine infection. He was kept in for 2 weeks and told he was v seriously ill and needed strong antibiotics. He had severe upper stomach pain going round his back thought it was a heart attack and had been of his food for a while also a bit jaundiced.

Have you done a capsule endoscopy?  That is how they saw the carcinoid tumors in my small intestine.  I had severe abdominal pain and the scans didn't show anything except what turned out to be the lymph nodes with carcinoid.

Hi:

I was diagnoed with Carcinoid back in June, 2007, had surgery and had mets to the lymph nodes. Since then, my tests have been coming out normal.  BUT, I have been having the SAME symptoms as you and no-one can tell me what it is.  I have pain in the sternum and below the right rib cage that radiates to the back.  It is worse when I eat.  Diarrhea (sp?) has gotten worse and is pale in color (sorry to be so graphic).  I have had a HIDA scan, CT, bloodwork and all is coming back normal for the Gallbladder and liver.  I am going for an endoscopy on Friday.  Because it is painful to eat, I don't even want to eat.  Let me know if you find out what is wrong and I will do the same!  God bless-

What did they do to find the tumor?  What tests?  I hope he is doing better.  God bless
