my mom is 56 years old. has just been dx with cancer that started in the appendix. when she went in for sx. they thought is was ovarian cancer. the onocologist says this type of cancer is catergorized as a colon cancer. signet cell carcinoma is the type of cancer it is. she had her omentum removed her ovaries, appendix, part of the colon. anyone out there familiar with this? any infor would be greatly appreciated. what i have read signet cell carcinoma is harder to treat but slow growing. my mom was healthy no symptoms. her obgyn palpated a enlarged ovary on exam, and this is how it all began.

they removed my dad's appendix when they removed 60% of his liver and a foot of his colon...i hope you have good luck and many prayers on your side..peace

My mother is in a similar situation. She is 57 years old, was admitted to the hospital Nov 2005 for a blockage in her colon. During surgery they removed two large tumors from her colon, her ovaries, 23 lymph nodes, all cancerous. Started in her appendix which had long been eaten away by the cancer. She is undergoing aggressive treatment and her 3 mo scans were clear. She is doing very well. There are new drugs being developed every day so there is hope. I would be happy to share any info with you. Her type is signet ring cell adenocarcinoma.

I am also being treated for cancer that started in my appendix. It had spread to my colon, intestines, ovaries and omentum and all of this was removed on March the 8th. I will get a port today for my chemo and it will start in about a week. They have also ordered a PET scan for Friday. Does this sound like the same you mom is getting? I used UAB Hospital in Birmingham Alabama because that is where the GYN Oncology Dr were. Hope to keep in contact maybe we can help each other Andrea

My wife is 50 and was dx with cancer that started in the appendix on April 4th. It involved the omentum, and one ovary and lots of gel fluid with seeding. He didn't get it all and he's saying it won't respond to chemo...is this the case? A GN Oncologist did the surgery but since it's appendix cancer he wants us to meet with the Oncologist this Friday. She was to have a hyserectomey that day and they knew a mass was in there....we were hoping for a fibroid. Any help and good news for us? Thanks Chip

I am 41 years old. my cancer was found through a routine appendectomy on Feb 21st 2005. I had an adnocarcinoma completely inside the appedix which was determined to be colon originating. I then Had a right hemicolectomy on March 15th 2005 and 25 lymph nodes were removed also. One of the lymph nodes was positive for colon cancer. I suddenly became a stage III colon cancer patient. I had a port inserted in May 2005 and began a regimine of 12 chemo treatments of FOLFOX 4. I finished my treatments on Nov 5, 2005. I had tons of side effects during the treatment(extreme nausea, very low white blood counts, very low platelet counts, extreme bone pain, serious heartburn, an unbelievable sensitivity to cold, extreme fatigue, poor balance and an extremely bad taste in my mouth) and a very serious bought of pnemonia after the treatment finished. I have lingering neuropathy in my left hand and both feet. But I would do it again in a heartbeat because according to the scans and bloodwork, I am cancer free. I have a wonderful husband and two young children so all of the discomfort was worth being here with them. The surgeon who removed my appendix and also did the hemicolectomy told me that he had not found this type of cancer in the appendix in his 21 years of practice. Both he and my cancer doctors expressed that I was very lucky as the cancer had spread to a very intolerant organ. Good Luck to you.

Thanks Carrie, We found out Friday that she has appendiceal mucinous ademocarcinoma. Did you have alot of jell fluid in your abdomen or was it contained to the appendix? They never said anything about the lymph nodes. Did you have chemo in an IV? We're planning on getting ahold of Dr. Loggie in Omaha. He removes all remaining cancer and washes out the abdomen with warm chemo for 2 hours. They did remove the omentum, uterus, both ovaries and the appendix. He left the right colon but talked to the oncologist about it and he said there was no need to. Thank you again. Chip

chip - My cancer was contained within the appendix. The lymph nodes were removed along with the right colon on the advice of several physicians because as you said this type of cancer is slow growing and may have jumped to my lymph nodes. I did have the cancer in one of the lymph nodes. This is why I had the chemo. I did have I.V. chemo. folfox 4 is a combination of 5fu, lecovorin and elaxatin. As I discribed in my earlier email, the side effects were pretty bad. If your mom can avoid the side effects with a more targeted treatment, it is to her advantage. Good luck!

I am 56 and diagnosed with appendix cancer (signet cell and mucinous). It has not spread to other organs and I am at Stage II High Risk. My appendix had perferated. I had an appendectomy, right hemicolectomy and then IP chemotherapy. I am now undergoing IV chemo treatment for colon cancer since that is what was recommended by one cancer hospital. I am having bad side effects and have only have had 5 of the recommended 12 treatments. I have gotten various opinions, some of which said not to go through the IP chemo and the IV chemo. I want to end the IV chemo but what to try to get more opinions.
