What if Sutent isn't working??

My mom goes for her scans on Monday to see if the Sutent is working for her.  She has already been on Torisel, which only worked for a couple of months.  My question is this, what happens if Sutent is not working?  At one point her oncologist told us that if Sutent does not work, most likely the others won't either.  Is this true?  I have heard of many people not responding to Sutent but than respond to something different.  I really don't understand because there are many drugs used to treat kidney cancer....I do know that many are closely related to Sutent.  If anyone can give me some advice or knowledge before her scans I would greatly appreciate it!  I am so scared.....

Hope

There are so many new drugs out there if one doesn't work another might.  Don't ever give up.  Has she tryed IL-2 she might ask her doctor about that.  Also you can get so many questions answered on

you can join free. there are so many different people that can help. I have been on sutent for al-most 4 years and it is still working.  I had to cut the dose down a-lot. I am on two weeks on and two weeks off at 37.5 mg but so far so good.  I wish you all the luck.   edie

Hi Hope,

I hope your Mom gets good news on Monday.  I'm keeping her in my prayers.

I think these medicines are kind of closely related.  They are all called "targeted therapy" but they work from different pathways, so when one doesn't work maybe the next one will.  The Torisel worked for Dave for 8 months, then quit.  Now he's been on Sutent for about 14 months and is doing well.  But it is so scary...if and when the Sutent stops working, what next?  Dave is a fighter, and he says he's going to keep fighting and hope in the meantime more advances are made.  Just think...15 years ago we didn't have these treatments...so who knows what the next few years might have in store for us.

It's hard to think positive, I know.  But we just have to take it one day at a time and do the best we can.  Please keep us posted on your Mom's progress and let us know what she finds out on Monday.

Nancy

You have been on Sutent for a long time. Please tell me a bit more about your treatments. I was on Torisel for almost 8 months (mets very small in my lungs)and now my CTscan revealed a small lymphode tumor, next week I am going to start new treatment most likely with sutent. I did not have any side effect from the torisel (only my nails). Why did you cut down on the dosis? Please keep in touch!

Hi '

I took Sutent for 18 mo. before it stopped working. There are two drugs approved as the next line of treatment. Afinitor and Votrient are used after Sutent. I've been on Afinitor and now on Votrient. It's been 3yrs. since my mets appeared. Take one day at a time andnever give up. Attitude is Everything.

Thanks for the message John, but my mother passed away 6 days after her scan.  Sutent did nothing and the cancer had spread all over her body.  There was absolutely nothing they could do....
