I live in Portland, Or in the United States and am willing to travel. I have been told that I need a whipple for a nueroendocrine tumor and I would like to go with someone who has a lot of experience. I would prefer to go to California but I am willing to go anywhere in the United States for someone who is very experienced. Thanks

Hi livewiremom,

First let me say how relatively lucky you are in being diagnosed with NET rather than adenocarcinoma of the pancreas.  NET is by far the less lethal of the two.

The most experienced Whipple surgeon is without a doubt Dr. John Cameron at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md.  He has done more Whipple surgeries than any other surgeon in the world.

Since you have been advised that you require Whipple surgery, your NET must be on the head of your pancreas.  Of course, I am sure there are other surgeons who are also very qualified to do Whipple surgery, but Dr. Cameron is the most experienced.

PanCan, an organization that promotes research and also aids patients who have pc, will advise you on surgeons in Ca, if you desire.  You can google them for their phone number and more info about them.

Good luck as you continue your treatment journey.

I also interviewed Dr. Nissen at Cedars Sinai. He is a wealth of knowledge but I decided to go with UCLA because I wanted someone with more years of doing the whipple.  Good Luck!

My husband saw Drs. Yeo and Kennedy in Philadelphia.  Besides being top notch doctors, the hospital and nurses were amazing.  Good luck to you.

My Husband had his whipple done at Calif Pacific Medical Center by the most wonderful man Dr. Hassoun (415-600-1010) It was almost five years ago.I believe this man had alot to do with him being alive today.  He has stage 4 pancreatic cancer. In April of 08 it came back in his liver and Dr. Hassoun did a liver ablation. It is very important to find someone that has done hundreds of whipples. We  have two friends that have also had whipples from Dr. Hassoun over a year and a half ago, I would send my family or myself to this wonderful man. good luck

HI

The most experienced Whipple surgeon is without a doubt Dr. John Cameron at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md.  He has done more Whipple surgeries than any other surgeon in the world.  BUT he is 67 ish and semi-retiring He is Not head of surgery anymore  at John Hopkins.  His #1 student Dr  C. YEO  did not replace him for  (John Hopkins politics) so he moved on to Thomas Jefferson Memorial in Philadelphia where he is head of surgery there...  Dr Yeo is VERY VERY positive, smart, and has done over 1000 whipples and mini whipples.  He can do what many are not experienced enough to do  so it seems.
