Hi,

I am responding to RadiationRuth's Myelofibrosis message dated 1/28/06 on the board. I am a 49 year old Myelofibrosis patient diagnosed 3.5 years ago. I was diagnosed when my spleen was enlarged to the point that I could hardly walk or breathe or eat. I was very blessed that I had a great surgeon, Dr. Robert Shafor in Slidell, Louisiana who performed my splenectomy, which gave me great relief. I am on a wait and watch program with no meds at this time. I do take a lot of vitamins and eat 5-7 fruits & vegetables daily. I see an oncologist and Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist at Hematology & Oncology Services based in the New Orleans, LA area (now in Slidell and Metairie since Hurricane Katrina.)
Your father is very blessed to have you. I will pray for you both.

Thank you SO MUCH for your reply. You've brightened my day!

Had a bad couple of weeks with some low counts, but somehow turned them around and once again we celebrate a tenth of a point upwards in WBC's.

Your reply has really bought HOPE to our entire family. Keep on a trudging. Dig in deep. Everyday is a new victory.

I've become a real believer in natural remedies, like elderberry extract for asmatha, hayfever, and allergies and the benefits of juicing, nutrients and glyco nutrients. Healthy living and a positive attitude go a LONG way. (That's very diffcult to admit when you're in the medical profession.) But the standard joke is, "What do you call a medical student who makes D's in medical school?"...Answer.... DOCTOR.

Keep defying the odds!! It was great to hear from you. We also have family in Lousiana - New Iberia and parts there on......You're family, anytime you need to hollar - give a shout.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Leesa, I was browsing this message board and saw your message.  I too am in Louisiana (New Orleans).  Luckily I was undamaged by the storm.  I'm wondering if we see the same Hematologist - I go to OCF.  I've never met anyone else with this disease and would love to get together with you.  If you get this, write me at either prn@mindspring.com or prn741no@earthlink.net.
