My dad has been diagnosed with GBM4 in January 2006. He is going through chemo treatment right now and taking dexamethason (decadron) as well. Ever since he got diagnosed, we put him on mostly vegetarian diet. We do not use any fat (e.g olive oil) when preparing food for him. He is taking flax seed oil, however, on regular basis. Today he went to his neurologist and she told us that my dad has high sodium levels in his body (his ankles are swallen) and that we should try to decrease it. I have searched the internet but all I could find is "heatlhy diet" which we are already doing. Has anyone out there experienced this? If so, any tips how we could lower it down?
Thanks so much!

Hi,

I am new to all this but wanted to let you know. My 10 year old, just turned 11 last week, was diagnosed recently with gliomatosis cerebri. He, too, is on Decadron for 4 1/2 weeks now. His ankles are swollen - and this can be a side effect of the steroid. There are many side effects of the decadron I have found that may not be experienced by all but my child has experienced. Also - if you run a search on blood tests and high sodium levels you will find some more reasons for a boost in sodium level that are not diet related. SOunds like you are working really hard on helping your Dad regain his health. Good luck and the best wishes for that, Stay strong.
