Subject: Help - What to Expect!!!
Date: 05/02/2006
My mother-In-Law was diagnosed with PC in December. The first couple months, aside from some minor discomfort, she was doing ok. But over the last month - month and a half she has really started to decline. She cannot keep any food down and a colostomy bag had to be put in as she cannot get out of bed. She is on Methadone now for the pain and also to try and aleviate some of the nausea. My family is having a terrible time accepting this terrible disease will take her. Given the condition she is in now I was wondering if anyone could tell me how long she may have. Her 1st great grandchild will be born on August 29th and I fear she will not be here to see her.

Has she had any treatment? Was surgery an option? How far has the PC spread? Usually surgery is not an option for most patient which is too bad because that is the only real cure. Chemo has added months to the life expectancy and should be considered. With no treatment..probably 6-12 months depending on her performance status.
God bless.

Thank you for responding to my messae. My mother-in-law decided from day one that she did not want to do the wipple operation. Her doctor told her that the recovery would be a long, painful process for her and with her poor health to start with, there was a strong chance she could die on the operating table. She does not wish to do chemo either. I really don't think it will be long now. They have had to put in a colostomy bag and she can't keep anything down. In the last week she started vomiting bile. The hospice nurse said that was a sign of rapid decline. This has been so hard on the family.

God bless you too.
