Subject: Caregiver Disagrees With Treatment

What if I disagree with treatment. Do I keep
my mouth shut. With two surgeries and two
malignant tumors and positive lymph nodes
and positive findings in stomach lining ...
a huge sarcoma......I would opt for quality
of life or alternative medicine. The doctor
wants radiation with possible chemo. He
hasn't had the final meeting with the tumor
committee yet....but he feels those are the
options. I'm not sure if I should even say
what I feel. Anyone run into this?

I have been going through a similar situation. In the end the only person who can make this decision is the patient and as caregivers it is best to abide by their decisions and support them in their choices. It is possible to ask the patient how she feels about the chemo.
Definitely find out about side effects and find out if your loved one wants to put up with them. When the doctors tell you about side effects it is wise to ask what percentage of patients encounter a particular side effects, how manageable are they. Then let your loved one make the choice.
It is called being patient active, and although it is hard at first, i found it to be quite freeing.

Thank you for getting back to me and of course,
you are right. The treatment is going to be
five weeks of radiation and hormone treatment.
We meet with radiologist soon. The treatment
was recommended by the surgeon, but he thinks
that is what it will be.
I get too involved in decision making and it
should not be this way. I will stay educated
and still make sure she is making all the
decisions.
