Neck swelling on right side, worried!

Hi, I would like to hear from anyone who has/had similar symptoms as mine and what your diagnosis was? I saw my Dr few months back for recurrent illness, fatigue, swollen upper neck nodes. The result of that visit was Vitamin D supplements for deficiency and progesterone cream for lack thereof. I am 40yo. I have had numerous oral ulcers only in the back of my mouth, the last few without signs of any other illness ie respiratory infection. A few weeks after the Dr visit, I noticed a puffy swelling on my lower right neck , I've since learned by looking online that this is the posterior cervical triangle area. I wactched it and then one day by accident I leaned back to stretch with arms over head, felt the area, and it was quite firm. I've thought it could be everything from cyst, lipoma, fat tissue, muscle swelling.... When my arm is not raised, the swelling changes throughout the day usually being worse in the afternoon. Then a few weeks now, there seems to be a few small firm nodes higher up more on the side of my neck. Starting to worry quite a bit, I've no illness, fever, or node pain. I've had some recent all over itching. That's about it, I have a dr's follow up July 5th. I guess I just need some support and assurance that I'm not crazy or a hypochondriac! I do not smoke or drink, am female. I would appreciate any comments or advice thanks!!

You are not a hypochondriac!  While there could be many causes to your symptoms you have every right to be concerned.  Getting to the bottom of this is the smart thing to do, so don't let anyone make you feel like you're worrying for nothing!

My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 tonsil cancer last November.  He had only one symptom - a swollen lymph node in his neck.  Doctor after doctor told him there was nothing to worry about, it was just a burned out node, blah, blah, blah.  He just had a feeling.  Like you, he's never smoked, drinks only socially, had no illness, pain, no other symptoms at all.  His bloodwork looked great, the CT scan showed nothing, a needle biopsy showed nothing.  Finally the third doctor shared his concern and did a surgical biospy of the node - sqamous cell carcinoma originating in the tonsil.  He doesn't even have his tonsils and there was no tumor that even the doctors could see - until they went in for surgery and after the biospy of the node went looking for the source.  So it's worth getting checked out.

Just tonight ABC News did a story about the increase in throat cancer in both men and women in their 40s and 50s.  Go find a doctor who will do a biospy on that node and don't stop looking until you do.  It may not be cancer at all but you need to be sure.

By the way, my husband completed his treatment, is cancer free and is not expected to have a relapse.  It's very curable.

I hope I didn't scare you - I don't think you should be afraid.  It's very likely some other cause.  But I just think you should listen to your instincts, and from your post your instincts are telling you to get it checked out for sure.

Much love to you ~ keep in touch with us here ~ GDW

GDW thanks very much for your reply. I too have no tonsils but I was not aware you could get cancer like that if they were gone! Very good to know thank you. I am considering moving up my appt as the first swelling has been there at least 8 weeks. It's just difficult to get off work right now so I've been trying to justify it in my head thanks again!

As GDW mentioned, get to a Doctor that will not brush this off.

I was very fortunate to have a family Doctor that sent me to the local Ear,Nose, and Throat Specialist from the start. He (ENT) treated me for an infection for 10 days to rule that out. I returned with no improvement on the lymphnode that I found on the right side of my neck. He then did a biopsy and it was cancer.

The local ENT Doctor sent me to a friend of his that is Chief Surgeon at a teaching Hospital. All is well now. The important part is, you have to be your own advacate in many cases. Take charge. I have read too many cases here where the Doctors brushed the patients off to only have the patient be worse off later down the road when the patient had a gut feeling to begin with.

I totally agree with Double P...get in to see an ENT ASAP and do not take no for an answer....ask questions until you are satisfied.....do not be brushed or blown off until someone gives you a biopsy or a very credible explanation for your symptoms...we ain't docs-so you gotta get to one ASAP....time is of the essence.......... odave
