Sweating and Cold Chills

Hello Everyone,

I'm new here and have had a nagging problem I need help with.

I had a partial left nephrectomy on July 22nd. So I am almost 3 weeks post-op. I have had a continued problem since, that is driving me crazy. Around 4 or 5 times an hour, I will within seconds, feel myself get hot and then I break out in a clothing drenching sweat. I'm talking it's running down my face, through my hair and all over my body. I can just feel it coming over me in seconds. It lasts for about 1-2 minutes and then I switch to being freezing cold and I get the chills. At first I thought it was a side effect of the hydrocodone, but I've been off of it for 1 1/2 weeks now. I did have this problem just twice in the months before I was diagnosed, but thought it was because I was stressed out and eating a lot of sugar. When I switched to low-carb, it went away. That's not working this time. It was originally happening around the clock when I first got home, but not so much now during the day. Just a couple of times, but at night! Oh my word, I get no sleep for the constant throwing my covers off and then snatching them back. It's constant and around the clock at night.

I had a hysterectomy in 2000 and they left me one ovary, but I didn't have this problem even after that. Is anyone else experiencing this? I don't know if the surgery messed up my hormones or if it's unrelated to hormones and the surgery messed up my bodies temperature regulator? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lisa

I don't know if this will help or not, but when my husband was having horrible night sweats (he would wake up absolutely drenched with sweat), the doctor prescribed a medication called "Bellafem" for him.  It's a type of hormone.  It helped a lot....

Hi Nancy,

Thank you for the reply. I guess I need to call my doctor because I'm one month post-op today and still having this problem. Not so much during the day now, but continually through the night. It's driving me crazy. My entire body breaks out in a sweat one minute and then I'm freezing the next. It's keeping me from sleeping at night.

I'm sorry, I'm new here. Could you explain further? I don't know who Mike is or what a port is.

I just got off the phone with a doc from my office and he mentioned a pocket of infection and asked if I've had a fever. I don't think I have, but haven't been checking it. I will check it this weekend off and on and he said to call back on Monday.

I am sutent and lately have been having dreadful sweats.  sometimes by the time I have walked down the stairs my hair is wet,  I then get very cold and end up spending the day putting and taking off a jumper.  My mcmillian nurse was unsure, so when I see the oncologist I will mention it to her.  I have not had a temperature.  I am not sure if it is a siefe effect of sutent or weather the cancer has grown further.

Hi Cherril,

I am not on sutent so I don't think there's a connection there, but I agree the sweats are dreadful! I've taken my temperature several times since speaking with the doctor last evening and I don't have a temp, either.

Can the sweating be a sign that cancer has grown? I'm only 4 weeks post-op and my tumor was so small, I was assured that they got it all. I just can't figure out the sweating, nor can I find a connection with other's experiencing the same thing. It's so bewildering. Please let me know what your oncologist says.

On a side note, you are in my prayer's.

Hi Lisa in Tennessee. I had my open left partial neph on July 22nd also. It has not been fun at all!!!! Would like to converse if you are still posting on this sight. It helps me so much to talk things over with someone who's been through "this".
