I want to preface this by saying that I do understand that everyone will
have a different LEEP experience and I am not trying to undermine anyone’s
feeling or experiences, so please don’t jump down my throat for this post.

With that said....I really hope that the girls who read these messages don't
listen to all of the hype from the majority of the posts. I had my LEEP done
this past Friday (2/6/09) and it was nothing. I arrived at the outpatient
center, was put under general anesthesia, woke up and didn’t feel a thing. The
only down side to the entire procedure was that it took 2 days for me to sleep
of the anesthesia. I have not had an ounce of pain and there is very little
discharge (which I know is rare).

I highly recommend that you request for your doctor to do the LEEP under
general anesthesia. If your doctor does not give you that option, you always have
the option of going to a doctor who does offer it.

For those women on here who are having a hard time accepting their diagnosis
just remember that HPV has unfortunately become very common among women and it
is nothing to be ashamed of. We should all be grateful that the LEEP procedure
can prevent many of us from having cervical cancer. Having the LEEP does not
take anything away from you that makes you a woman (as stated in a previous
post). Personally I had no problem letting my doctor cut out a tiny part of my
cervix in order to prevent cancer.

And for those women who are getting ready to jump down my throat for saying that
this procedure isn’t a big deal; I spoke with my doctor the morning of my
surgery and told her what I read on here because I was curious about the cramping,
bloating and other side effects mentioned on this board, and she assured me
that she had never heard of those things happening after she performed a LEEP. Yes,
cramping does occur while the procedure is being done, which is why she performs
it under general anesthesia, but there is zero pain afterwards. She also told
me that there was no cause for bloating since this procedure has nothing to do
with going into the belly.

So to all of those girls who are looking for support and information before
they have a LEEP done, please know that you have nothing to worry about.

I wish you all the best with your test results.

Hello,

My name is Angela and I am going to be having LEEP surgery on Tuesday April 21, 2009 I am freaking out but not like any of the other women on here. I am also going to be getting married May 2, 2009 which is 12 day after my surgery. So if anyone should be freaking out its me. I have CIN III which from my understanding is the worst. I am 19 years old. I am scared. But I know that I will be sure to be put asleep. I have heard a lot of bad and good about this LEEP surgery but everyone women is different. The Biopsy that they do before the LEEP (well that is what they did to me) was surppose to hurt. I laughed when they did it. It didnt hurt at all. I will have to say also my fiance and I have been trying to be pure before our wedding day but we did slip once and I can remember it hurting to have sex he kept hitting my cervix and I yelled cause it hurt so bad. My question is how long did you go before you had sex after your LEEP surgery. I would like to enjoy my husband the night of out wedding. I do also know that GOD will protect me and will watch over me and I am so thankful that I caught this early enough to get it fix. But if I waited about 5 years I probably would have HPV cancer! I know my fiance and I will be praying while this is going on. I will keep everyone of you in my prayers and that you all heal greatly and you do not have to deal with this again. But if anyone can answer my question that would be great!

My first time here and hope my posting will go through. Thank you, Thank you for this site. Mom of 3 little boys and just had an 'abnormal pap'. Called in for a visit to discuss and have a colscopy. Was told 'on the spectrum it is severe'.  Went through the procedure and saw two major white spots with samples taken. Waiting for the biopsy results which will come in the next two days. Was told that the Leep procedure will probably be warrented. Have done much research regarding this and not afraid of the procedure itself, but worried about the efficacy. I guess I need to wait for results, but wonder if a hysterectomy would be be overkill, yet would never have to wonder in the future. My doctor wouldnt deferentiate between 'severe' and 'pre-cancer'. Is severe considered pre-cancer?

Hi, my name is Krystal and I am a 19 yr old COLLEGE STUDENT w/ no children. Who lost her virginity @ 18 and only had 2 sex partners.

Heidi Ann...YES, severe dysplasia is considered to be PRE-Cancerous and not cancer. In most cases, it is extremely uncommon for dysplasia to progress to cancer if it properly treated and the women has regular follow up exams. However, since your diagnosis is severe/high grade then it is important the PRE-cautionary measures are taken to prevent cancer. (the more severe the dysplasia, the more susceptible to cancer you become) So, do not take this lightly this is a very important inssue (NOT to SCARE you). So I do recommend the LEEP procedure to be preformed b/c the fact that you did all that is in your power to prevent cancer out weighs the discomfort by far. If you have any more questions feel free to ask and I will respond.

*** I too have been recently diagnosed w/ severe/high grade dysplasia and it has been a week since I had the LEEP procedure done. So far the healing process has not been as bad as some people make it out to be. Your side effects mainly depend on how severe you dysplasia is***

I had a LEEP done yesterday afternoon, and today I am going to help my Mom move, I feel that good.  I was having anxiety attacks all week over the horrifying stories some women have posted on this board.  What needs to be explained is that a majority of patients undergoing this procedure probably have low-grade dysplasia like myself.  The worst part was the local anethesia which made my heart race and made me dizzy, but I was so preoccupied by that, that all of sudden the Dr. said ok its done! I felt nothing. The wire she used was a little thin wire like the ones inside of lightbulbs. I was imagining a laser like a lightsaber!  The Dr. put something on my cervix to stop bleeding and pain, which will come off as I heal over the next few weeks. I laid down in the room until I stopped feeling woozy, went to Friendlys for icecream (I am 25) and relaxed the rest of the night.  And thats my LEEP story.

I am so strengthened by you all's stories and the courage you all display as you go through these procedures.   In my earlier teen years I had lots of crazy female problems and even missed a few weeks of the start of my tenth grade year of school because of my prolonged menstrual cycles and intense blood flow.  I've always been scared of developing more serious health problems---just recently turned 30 years old.  Reading these message boards is very eye opening for me, I try to put myself in you all's shoes and wonder what I'd do or how I'd react under these circumstances.  I'm a wimp when it comes to pain. I am curious where you all get your courage and strength.  I, for one, read the bible and helps me to know that even the King David in Psalms said "I have been afflicted to a great extent.
Preserve me alive according to your word"chptr 119:107.  Maybe that sentiment could give you all courage too. If you agree I know you'd like the first couple of words at Isaiah 33:24.  I can't wait for those sentiments to become reality in the near future for everybody.  Thank you all for sharing your experiences and I hope you all the best.

Hello,

I too am so glad that I found this message board.  I am 32 and have two boys 9 & 6 and recently had my first pap come back abnormal in April.  I've been having anual pap tests done since I was 18; so I was so scared, plus I am recently divorced and this is not news you want to hear when you are all alone.  Turns out I have mild dysplasia caused by the HPV virus which I also found out I had on the same day.  My doctor told me that since my dysplasia was so mild that I could either have the tissue watched or have the Leep procedure done and move forward.  Since I have two boys and have my tubes tied he felt like this would be the best option to put it behind me.  I had it done a week ago today and I am shocked at all of the horror stories in the previous posts.  My Leep procedure maybe took 5 minutes I had mild bleeding; no cramping and pretty much felt great.  I was a little emotional afterward not because of the Leep but because of the HPV virus that I have and the concerns that go along with that.  I too wondered if I would have to have another Leep procedure done in the future, but I agree with a previous post that I'm thankful that this procedure is out there to allow new and healthy tissue to grow in place of the abnormal tissue that can lead to cervical cancer.

I wish that there were more things being done to treat and cure HPV because I have to admit at 32 and being married since I was 20 I had no clue that it was so easy to contract.  I have no idea how long I've had it and have not had many sexual partners; none since I've been divorced.  I'm alarmed that 80% of women have some form of HPV and a lot of women have it and don't know it.  Thankfully all of us on here are aware of it and can be pro-active in treating it and preventing abormal cells from turning into cancer.

I wish everyone well and will continue to check the boards. :)

I'm scheduled to have the LEEP procedure this coming Friday. I'm really not nervous about the procedure itself, but more so the weeks after. For one, my period is suppose to come exactly a week after. How does that effect the healing process? Two, I'm leaving for vacation exactly a week after as well (great timing huh) and I'm wondering about the discomfort in the second week of the healing time. And lastly, what was the average time doctors suggested obstaining from sexual intercourse? (that might be the main question)

I'm going to have my LEEP done tommorrow and I'm already feeling the way you are. I've been crying off and on for 3 days. I feel kinda like a guy that has a vesectomy, I don't feel like a real, functioning woman. I'm only 23 and have had nothing but problems with the whole area and I'm scared and worried. No one in my life can really understand. I have a boyfriend of 8 years and I worry what he's really thinking about me. I'm freaking out about the whole thing. I'm hoping that some of this anxiety will go away after the procedure. But I'm still going to have to deal with all the emotional crap. Good luck and everything gets better with time!

I have had a Leep procedure, and yes its a lot less painful than I read about here. I actually got up after 15 mins  and my husband drove me home. I had no bleeding, only the charcoal stuff discharge. BUT!!! I repeat.......I did have bloating , so I dont really think it matters if you were told that it does not happen. Many on here  have had bloating, And ladies I too was very scared and nervous, Here," listen to this!. After I had it done and was in the car going home. I said to my husband. Com'mon!! wheres my timmy's coffee :). all will be fine ladies, just believe...For making yourself nervous and stressed out. well can play heavy on your system. So  relax and remember having this is a way, that could save a future disaster. So chin up! good luck...... God bless you all. May you have a easier time than I did with the bloating....That is if you do get it..maybe you won't.........
