How do lifestyle factors and exposure to environmental substances affect our cancer risk?

Anybody got any input experience on this. My mother has stage 4 renal cell carcinoma (kidney), spread to lung , lymph node, lesions in brain. They are currently doing wbr. Anybody had in side effects?
