Hi Joanie,
I was diagnosed with acid reflux and had a lot of trouble for a year. Turns out it was pancreatitis. I am on Protonix which works great. I too have a Hietal Hernia. I pushed the head of my bed up six inches and that works. One of the biggist things that helped was getting off sodas. No caffiene, no carbonated drinks, eat small snacks during the day. After eating at anytime, don't lay down on the couch, sit upright. Also, no eating before bedtime. I try to eat by 6 o'clock and if my stomach feels really empty and uncomfortable close to betime (10-11), I have a Gucerna Oatmeal Raisen bar. Stay away from citric acid in sugar free drinks. Tomatoes are acidic and I couldn't eat them without paying for it later! While drinking water and milk was pretty boring, caffeine-free tea (I like it hot) was a very nice way to end the day. The good news- if you need to lose weight this will do it. Walking helps. Good luck :)

I appreciate your response.Everyone is so different. Being elevated at night is a must, especially with hiatal hernia. My doctor also told me not to do anything strenuous after eating because it would cause "back-up". So, I wait about 1 hour before mowing the lawn or vacuuming. It is worth the wait. The more time that passes the better things will get. Eventually peristalsis will take over and things like bending down will become much better. Ginger is also good to settle your stomach. I know many people who eat the apple slices with very good success and I drink a room temp small glass of ginger ale.

Hello jkavzig,
I was treated for EC in 2010. One of the things my surgeon told me was that the acid reflux actually gets worse after the operation, which is true. Anyway I keep my head elevated at night and try to avoid bending over at the waist to keep the acid from going up the espophgus and don't eat late or at least a couple of hours before going to bed, except, one thing I read on this site, and it seems to work, I eat a peeled apple about an hour before going to bed. It seems to help.
Good luck to you.

I was totally surprised with GERD also. I am an EC survivor. My son and granddaughter also have GERD. Diet is very important. He cannot use the protonix so he is treating his GERD entirely by diet. Oh, keep yourself elevated at night. Purchase a wedge or get an adjustable bed. It is important to keep the hydrachloric acid from your stomach from coming up into your esophagus. When I keep on my GERD diet I do very well also. Best wishes to you.

RE: Hi to all my buds!

Georgi and all,
I hope you don't mind that I join in. I don't have esophogeal cancer, but have been recently diagnosed with Barrett's after my routine three year endoscopy to monitor chronic esohogitis. I am so worried and I am doing everything I can to take preventative steps. My pathology reading was indefinite for dysplasia. So my doctor wants to treat the inflammation and do another scope with biopsy in a few more weeks. He put me on a daily dose of Dexilant which made me extremely tired. I have 5 daughters and I honestly felt anemic and could'nt function like this. So now has me on Prilosec now until I have my next biopsy on March 23rd. I am still having fatigue but not as bad as Dexilant. But it's still too much for me and I have been having a sharp pain under my rib cage that wakes me up at night only when I am in bed lying down. I am worried that the Prilosec is doing damage. Would also appreciate knowing some warning signs that I need to stay on top of. I never had bad heartburn. The only reason I found out I had esohogitis 5 years ago is because I was taking Erythromycin and it tore up my esophogus and I had to be scoped. At that point my doctor said that I had this condition for a long time and said I had a hiatal hernia. I am worried that because I have "silent GERD" I am unaware if my condition is getting worse. Thanks for listening and I would love any advice or feedback you may offer. Prayers for all of you!

Hi Georgi,
It's great to hear from you and that you are now retired and continue to be cancer free. Remodeling a cabin must be a lot of fun, although snow I can live without. We've are having a very usually warm winter in Upstate NY with only a few dustings of snow and no major snowstorms -- yet.

Hi to all my buds!

Scorry I have not posted lately. WE MOVED AND RETIRED TO our cabin and doing a lot of remodeling. Just had my 3 year pet scan and all is fine. Yhanks be to God! Right now we are getting a little snow and it is so pretty on the pine trees, Most of the time I am feeling good,I do have a feww bad days, but they are far apart, Still taking pain meds and working with the doc to reduce the dosage. Everytime I see the cancer doc he calls me a miracle and I think he is right, No chemo or radiation, and I am eating beetter due to my pain doc giving me an antidepressent. Thanks to those that sent me private notes. Love you all and hope all is welll with those fighting the battle.
LOVE georgi
