My husband completed his radiation/chemo on April 30th. Did pretty well until the last week. A little queasy. No burns to his skin. We have now waited the 9 weeks and finally have a surgery date of Monday July 2nd. The surgeon has told us that his tumor has shrunk to the size of a pea or maybe it's just scar tissue. Can't be sure until surgery. He is scheduled to have a Robotic Assisted LAR surgey using the DiVinchi surgical system. His surgery should be about 4.5 hours. Hospital stay should be 3 to 4 days. Then recovery. He is healthly and strong so my hope is that it is a quick recovery.

How is your husband feeling these days?

My husband completed chemo and rad on June 22. He too had a rough last week. We met with the surgeon yesterday and the process sounds much like what you faced just recently. At this point in time, he is feeling better and is getting his energy back. His surgery date will be set by the end of this week, which should be around mid August. When you can, please let us know how your husband's surgery went. You ALL are in my prayers.

My husband had surgery last week. He was in the hospital for 3 nights. His surgeon used the robotic da Vinchi Surgery System. He has 6 cuts total. Five small ones in his stomach area and a longer insicion - about 3"- in what we like to call his bikini line. He didn't have to have a temp. ileo. The surgeon said his tissues looked really healthy, so he felt it wasn't necessary. He's doing great. He was walking the day after surgery. Slow but walking. Today he walked a little further and faster than yesterday. So progress is coming. He takes several naps a day but it takes a lot of energy to get better. No issues in the bathroom area. Our surgeon told my husband to get really strong. The stronger he is the better the surgery would go and the faster he would heal. We got his path report yesterday and he had 0 lymph node involvment out of 22 nodes taken. Meeting with the onc next week to see what the next step is.

Thank you so much for sharing (by the way, what is your and your husband's name?) this latest information. It's almost been two weeks now since surgery. Jeff has been walking about 1 mile a day for the past few days. When he comes back from his walk he hurts a bit. But that is understandable for the surgery he just had. Wasn't a good day yesterday for the bathroom. I am starting to track his food and the timing for the bathroom. He is on a low-residue diet right now.Notper doctor orders.  However, he did add blueberries to his shake yesterday morning so maybe that caused some issues. No shake or blueberries this morning. He also tried taking Motrin instead of his pain pills but the Motrin didn't seem to help much. So today he is back on Nophn. He is feeling much better now. Pain went from 5 to a 2 on a scale of one to ten. Another day to recovery.

Hi Anita...it sounds like Jeff is bound and determined to not let his recovery keep him down...that's amazing! Did the doctor say how long he will be training his colon before it accepts it's new job of rectum? I am an RN and I had a patient that said it took him about a year....I know everyone is different but it's nice to have a ballpark figure to gauge progress. Is your husband going to have IV chemo as well? How are you holding up Anita? We are doing our bestbto maintain a sense of humor about the whole ordeal, but some days can be pretty rough and sometimes I feel so helpless! Wishing I could carry the pain for him....Give my best to Jeff and let him know there is a bunch of people rooting for him..,and you too!

Yes, Jeff is bound and determined not to let cancer get him down. He really wants to get back to our "life." Doctor really didn't tell us much. Told Jeff to eat whatever he wants to. But we are trying to stick to bland foods. Doctor did say it could take up to 1 year for his system to figure out his "new" plumbing. Not sure about the chemo yet. We see the onc tomorrow and then go for a second opinion a week later. It would be nice if he just take Xeloda but...

Jeff has been hurting inside quite a bit the last few days. Going to call the doc tomorrow just to be sure this is normal. We have an appt. with him on Thursday. Thanks for asking about me. I am doing alright. But it's really hard to see him in so much pain. Yes, I feel so helpless sometimes. But all we both can do is be there to support our husbands through this ordeal. We did an early retirement 2 years ago so we could enjoy life. I call this just a bump in the road and we will get back to "life" as we know it soon. Here's to fast healing to both of our husbands. Take care of you. Will let you know how the doc appt. goes tomorrow.

How is your husband feeling these days?

Congratulations to your husband for a successful radiation / chemo regiment, along with the shrinkage of the tumor.

I myself, am a 38 yr old Female, complained of rectal bleeding since Feb 2012, and as treated as internal hemorrhoids til I insisted further investigation.  June 2012 -- upon colonoscopy was diagnosed with Stage 3 Rectal Cancer, T3N1.

July 13, 2012 finished an IVF cycle, to retrieve my eggs & have them fertilized by my husbands sperm, resulting in 4 embryos, in hopes to have children in the future.

July 24, 2012 -- tentative date for surgical Transposition of the Ovaries, to move them out of the field of radiation.

July 25, 2012 -- Radiation Simulation

July 30. 2012 -- XRT (IMRT or 3D conformational) with concurrent chemo of 5-FU for 6 weeks...hoping for Low anterior resection surgery vs. Abdominal perineal resection w/ permanent colostomy

I hope your husbands surgery went well and he's recovering quickly.  Hope to read-up on good updates.

Positive energy to all on this forum!

Hi Gail,

Saw the onc the other day. GOOD NEWS!!! No more chemo. Since his path report came back with 0/22 lymph nodes no cancer and his Staging on the path report was pT1N0M0 he didn't feel Jeff needed any more chemo. We saw the surgeon today and expressed our concern about Jeff not being able to sit and having night sweats. He is now taking antibiotics for a week to see if that helps. If not, he will need to have an x-ray to make sure there is no fluid building up inside (abcess).

How are you doing? How is your husband?
