I feel your frustration and pain throughout this ordeal. We really are our dad's patient advocate and short of going to all the appointments with him, you must be armed with information and questions. I have researched this disease to the fullest extent, and have found that an enzyme and vitamin b 12 test should be standard routine test for those with PC. As the pancreas is not functioning properly and B 12 deficiency is common especially in older people and those diagnosed with PC. It really is a shame that many of us here are left to our own devices.. Be informed as best you can and this forum is a great start :) Thanks to everyone who shares their stories and information.

experience from my husband was also using beano (OTC) when taking raw juice or veg that causes gas.  he takes 24,000 unit each up to 6 pills.  when eating big meal or higher in fat (oily cod) he would take 2 creons (48,000).  in average he is taking 3 to 5 creons a day.  we asked the doctor to change from 12,000 units (only good for snacks) to 24,000 units and from 3 creons a day to 6.  he felt that he does not need, but I always make sure he took if I am around.  it is also for nutrient digestion - breakdown (creon enzyms digest protein and fat so that body can absorb).  he is losing a lot of weight fast if he does not eat well or under antibiotics treatment.

It sounds like my dad is not receiving enough of the enzyme and we need to step it up. One of the problems is the gas that my dad is experiencing..it keeps him from being able to drink water at times. He feels as thou he really needs to burp with lots of pressure. I'm not sure if the Creon is causing this or can help these symptoms?

My Dad is currently taking creon to help with digestion of food.  Prior to taking Creon, he had gas ,bloating, full feeling after small instake of food . He started taking Creon (approx 1 1/2 weeks) The belching, gas pain and bloating seemed to have worsened. Should he take the Creon before during or after a meal? Will the Creon help relieve the gas, bloating full feeling or does it just help nutrionally digest the food?

Hi, hope I can help. Husband had to start taking CREON 6,000 last May, post Whipple procedure. We started out at 10 per day with 3 per meal and one with each snack. As time went on (months) we were able to reduce amt of CREON each meal (the pancreas will sometimes start producing enzymes again in small increments. HOWEVER, at the beginning and for about 6 months he also took GAS X, one per meal along with the CREON and that seems to do the trick in cutting down on gas and bloating. One good piece of evidence to watch for is his STOOLS. If they are white, floating or chalky in color, more CREON, if getting darker or back to normal colors, you might try backing off at least one CREON a day for a short time period. If Stools remain a natural color cut back again. The stools are the best way to determine if you are getting enough digestive emzymes needed for proper and complete digestion, thereby getting the most nutrition out of your foods. hope this helps, been there, doing that. GET THAT GAS X, it really helps! Donna

Hi Dutch girl, B 12 is great for assistingg the immune system, production of RBC, metabolism, ect. After hubbies Whipple, he had lost so much weight. If your dad loves vanilla ice cream, you can do just about anything you want with it. I made shakes 3x day by blending vanilla ice cream, a dropper full of liquid B12, WHEY PROTEIN ISOLATE, "any frozen fruit", and white grape juice to thin to milkshake consistency. It tastes so much better than BOOST or any of those premade shakes. (He also took one CREON and a GAS X with each snack). Hope this gives you some hope and some things you can do for your dad. He also would take two 1000 mcg twice/day. . Also to note, the WHEY PROTEIN ISOLATE has NO taste! Donna

Thanks Donna-

The GasX if over the counter?

It seems to be growing..as an issue..the gas and the pain that comes along with it. Not sure sometimes if it is the PC growing and worsening or a simple "gas" digestion progblem. Thanks for your input, it really helps.

Yes over the counter, worked better for hubby than "beano". Usually was taken in conjunction with the CREON. Good luck! Donna
