The first thing you father must do is to find a doctor that is experienced in treating metastatic renal cell cancer; this is especially important if he has a less common type of kidney cancer, which will probably not be known until the tumor is removed. The kidney cancer association has a list of experienced docs; call them at 800-850-9132 for a doctor near you (some very good doctors are not on their list). You will probably want both a urologist, who will remove the kidney), and an oncologist who can treat the cancer at distant sites. The oncologist, especially, will need experience in treating kidney cancer patients.
