My mom is rapid GMB we thought it started in her brain 2 yrs ago shes had 2 brain surgerys 1 cyber treatment which was 6 wk ago and has had 8 wks temodar before the cyber and after the surgery shes had a rough 6 wks .She lives with me and my 3 kids ones 18 16 11 .My younger sis helps me every day iam so greatful any way my mom came home from the hopspital on sun 9/17/06 with a bad cough and the hospice nurse told me that the cancer started in her lungs. Why didnt they tell us 2 yrs ago the DRs said it was primary brain cancer and not to worry about the 2 very small spots on her lungs. If any one knows why or had a similar situation i would appreciate any feed back hospice just came in on mon of this week any feed back iam very worried about this cough it gets worse every day hospice put her on oxygen last night my grandmother is driving me crazy to give her cough meds which do no good the Dr said it doesnt really matter he would prefer she didnt. Any help on any of this would be appreciated thanks Renee.

Renee, Did your Dr. confirm this? This does not make sense at all. GBM is a primary brain tumor. My mother had a couple of spots on her lungs which ended up being pnemonia and a blood clot. Side effects of her treatment. This is a terrible disease regardless of its origin or where it ends up. I wish you the best as you care for her especially with all the responsibility you have with your own children. God Bless. Eva Lyn

GBMs always always always are primary brain tumors. they never never never start in the lungs. whatever spots may be in her lungs, her lungs are not where the GBM started. it is possible for a GBM to spread from the brain to other places such as the lungs. But this extra-cranial spread (aka extra-neural spread) of primary brain tumors is really really rare. Someone may also reply that perhaps your mother had primary lung cancer 2 years ago and that the lung cancer metastasized to her brain. This is unlikely, as the pathologist examined the tumor that was removed from your mother's head and all reports are that it was a GBM. just my two cents, -Amnia

They Are Just Human

hospice people are just human. they take care of many patients. every now and then they confuse one cancer patient for another. this is likely to occur when they are under stress, such as talking to families, or when they are talking off the top of their head without having the patient's complete records in front of them. It is also possible that there was a miscommunication between you and them. what they said or what they meant to say is not what you heard or what you thought you heard. But regardless of who said what to whom, one thing remains immutable - GBMs can not start in the lungs. -Amnia
