Hi,

I just had surgery on 1/29 to remove a section of my colon, some spots on my liver and 32 lymph nods. The Dr. cut a good section out of the colon and reattached it, he removed two spots on the liver, one was cancer the other was fatty liver..out of the 32 lymph nods 3 had cancer.  When I went to the oncologist this past monday she said I had stage 4 cancer because it had moved to my liver. Yesterday Fri. 2/15 I had a Pet and C Scan done but I do not know the results of it and wont know till next week, Monday is a holiday uggghhh.  The oncologist recommended 32 weeks of chemo using FoxFor starting on 2/28..they want to put in a Porta Cath in next week...I am starting to freak out about the whole thing now and I am very scared/afraid...or ascared....I been reading that stage 4 cancer in the colon...may give you only a few years of life!! That is freaking me out..I just turned 49 last week...cancer was my birthday present!  I am reading stuff and it is scaring the crap out of me...What am i facing? Is this at any way curable ? Is it almost always a death sentance? Do I have any chance of beating this? I'm so scared

Somebody please give me some help

I was dx in November with colon cancer, mets to the liver. It is scary, but do not look at statistics. Keep in mind that within those stats, if a person w/colon cancer dies of a heart attack, s/he is still considered a cc statistic. Many people are dx after the age of fifty. Also, there are many more treatments for cc than there were ten years ago. My surgeon gave me a death sentence. My oncologist told me I was very treatable. Knock on wood the liver mets are shrinking, and when I had a colonoscopy (my first one) it came back clean. However, the biopsy of my liver showed colon cancer in the liver. So my tx is for cc. Thankfully it's working on the liver tumors. When you search on the internet, type in long-term survivors stage 4 colon cancer. If you just type in stage 4 colon cancer, you will get nothing but negativity. I am also on a forum which has been so beneficial (I take notes on tx that others are having).http://csn.cancer.org/forum/128 Another good forum ishttp://www.cancerforums.net/forums/21-Colon-Cancer-and-Rec Yes, this is scary, but try to have a positive outlook. Hi,

I am now 62 had surgery to remove a section of my colon in May 2012, recovered from that surgery then six sessions of Chemo (folfox).  On November 28, 2012 I had a liver resection to remove two spots on my liver. A recent CT scan found no evidence of cancer Yeah!  I am continuing with another six chemo treatments (folfox) as recomended by my oncologist.

I am optimistic, don't forget that the stats that are quoted are based on historical data and research is making great headway.  The stats that are relevant to you and me are those that will be comming out in 2017 and I intend to be here to read them, unless I get hit by a truck or something like that.

Don't freak out, you don't need the stress.  Stats can be so misleading.  This is tough but doable.

Hey!

I understand completely how you are feeling and the best thing to do now is to be happy you have found the problem and have started a course of action.  Focus your mind on healing and believe you can be cured.  Having others to correspond with that have been or are going through it helps so much.

I was diagnosed two years ago and just turned 49.  Stage IV as well.  I have had one colon resection, two liver resections (the most recent 10 days ago) and two types of chemo.  I highly recomment the port!!  I have the power port and love it (the first 4 rounds of chemo hurt my veins).

Please feel free to write anytime with questions or concerns.  All cases are different so others are right to say do not listen to stats.  If you did not start out in an otherwise healthy state I would focus on diet and nutrition and supplements in addition to the chemo and surgery.  The suggestions I recieved at the start were to eat whatever you wanted - they want you to keep weight on - but I just do not agree.

For the past two years, I have stuck with my 6 days a week at the gym if at all possible (lapses after surgeries and chemo of course).  At least 30 mins a day of aerobic activity - walking/running.  Include lots of fun and happy experiences, social time with friends and family.  Keep focusing on living a full life while you go through all the treatments, etc.  I feel my expiration date is as unknown to me as anyone and until I'm told otherwise, I will keep living with future goals in mind.

Pray, hope and don't worry!

jvellucci,

I too have stage 4 colon cancer that spread to my liver.   I am 45.  I had my initial surgery in 4/12.  I have 9 months of chemo and am now looking at a liver resection.   Initially I have over 25 spots on my  liver, chemo took care of all but one!  You need to stay positive, you can beat this!  I understand your "freaking out" but seriously, you can do this.   Stay Strong.

Can I ask what you did to get rid of all your tumors?? You sound very similar to me... I've been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer - mets to the liver (20-30 tumors in my liver) ... And it's in my lymph nodes... I'm just 28 years old - was diagnosed this Jan.... It's been a head soon for sure .... Having my third chemo treatment Monday, Folfiri/5fu/Avastin .... Had a colon resection in December .... Pretty scared, who knew you could go from living a happy go lucky life in your twenties and weeks later get told you have STAGE 4 CANCER - mind blowing! But please if you've managed to beat that many tumors in your liver it gives me great hope that I can too! - what did you do????

I just had to write you.  I was diagnosed 3/2005 with stage 4 colon cancer.  My cancer had spread from my colon to my liver and ovary.  I had a total hysterectomy, tumor from colon and liver removed.  I then endured 1 1/2 years of chemo.  I was 48 at the time.  It seems to be overwhelming but I never gave up.  I continue to get colonoscopies done but am doing very well.  I do not take any chemo.

At the time of diagnosis I was given 2 years but what I had going for me was my age.  I was young enough to fight it.  The hardest thing is waiting for test results to see if the drugs are working.  My doctor use to tell me that we would deal with the now and try not to worry about the what ifs.  I had a wonderful support system and continue to.

Hi At times even doctors can depress you , they go according to statistics and not the will and strength of the patient , my husband has been thru , 21 cycles of various chemos , kept playing golf , working and not getting bogged down , last months docs told him 5/7 more days and that's it , today he is in the hospital for another round of chemo , he has gone week but not given up , morphine / colostomy /. Are part of his life but he believes in living n fighting till possible xxx all the best Bibbann
