Hello  My husband started on this combo in April.  He had sugery in November and all was well with markers at 14!  He had a scan in April and there was "some recurrence" and he was put on Gemcitabine/Abraxane. He is 2 weeks on and 1 off.  The side effects have been very severe with all his hair gone his feet and ankles swollen and red and horrible diarrhea. He has had temps as high as 104 and is so weak. 18 months ago he was a strong energetic man .  This disease and treatment have been difficult to say the least.  We have a scan scheduled for friday. If it is working and keeping the cancer at bay then I guess he buckles down....if not I guess we find plan d!  As Tara said  Any thoughts are welcome.

Hi. I'm on the same chemo, 2 weeks on and 1 week off. And ya , it stinks. But...here's some advice for your husband I hope that will help some; I know I'm going to have a fever so I take fever reducer. Also pain reliever for the leg pain I get. My feet and ankles are swollen too...not sure how to fix that. I do know I make it worse with my salt intake    but I can't taste much so I lay on the salt and spices. After dealing with side effects of diarreah and constipation for the last 30 months, I'm figuring it out abit for me. I need to watch my fruit intake when I have diarreah....grapes just made it way worse. And with constipation I increase the fruit and liquids like warm tea ( and Senna).  I hope this helps some, Karen

Karen    Thank you!  It helps just knowing we are not the only ones out there.  How is your strength? Do you do any PT?  Have you any indication the chemo is working? Thanks

My strength is really good. My 9 month old grandson that weighs 22 pounds keeps me going and has given me huge biceps. HaHa. I walk 2-3 miles most days. But....chemo does slow me up with the side effects 2-4 days. I've been on this chemo since Oct. The last CT I had was in May. It showed a slight increase in the pancreas. And some of my lung tumors have doubled in size. According to my Doctors the chemo is just buying me more time. I'm not dwelling on that !!! I'm enjoying every day God blesses me with. I was given 3-5 months with out chemo. 12-18 months with chemo. That was 30 months ago and I don't see the end coming anytime soon.  Trust in God !! Karen

Although tumor markers are only one tool they use. It helps the Drs know if the chemo is working and heres how.  if you tumor markers were 14300 and went down to 7000 that is good news because they went down over 50%.  If you tumor markers are at normal range (0-35 is normal) say 25 and went to 50% well that is worse because it means the chemo is no longer working :( . Pet scans are usually the second course of action they use to see if the tumors have grown or spread :(

Hi Karen, My dad just found out today that he couldn't do the combo because of his platelets being too low. So, they are going to start up again next week to get those platelets up. So, it would be a 2 weeks on, 1 week off regimen. Is this what you experienced as well? Also, after one session of this combo his markers were 400 and they had previously been in the 300's after stopping Folfirinox. Should we be concerned after one session of this combo regimen or does it take time? They said they are using the 400 tumor marker as the baseline. I'm just wondering if I should be worried after one treatment? I'm struggling with all of this. It's so hard to see my dad so sick and trying to fight for more time. This cancer sucks! Tara

Tara, I had low platelets with the folfirnox and the gave me more through IV. I do have low white blood cells with the combo and I take shots of Neupogen to raise them back up. I am on 2 weeks on and 1 week off this chemo combo. My tumor markers float around a bit....but not by hundreds. I would not worry yet....give it a few treatments to get working...that's my opinion.

I agree cancer sucks......but....it's not a sudden death..a shock, like a heartattack or a car crash. Both my parents died from cancer. Dad had lung cancer. Mom had ovarian. But during that time I was able to ; say I love you- give lots of hugs-talk and talk-have that extra time----no regrets !!!

And now I have that extra time to.......finish things....love!!!!

That's how I'm looking at this journey....it's not soooo bad.

God's blessings to you and yours, Karen.
