I have been having pain the my left kidney area. I went to the Dr's and he thought i might have a kidney stone. He done an X-ray and nothing showed up. so he ordered an US and urine test. The US showed The right kidney appears normal In the left kidney there appears to be a mass in the mid-pole region on its lateral margin, measuring about 2.8x2.6x1.8cm in size. A CT scan is advised for further investigation of this ? mass. No other mass, cysts, calculus or hydronephrois could be seen, in either kidney. the bladder shoes no infection. While i was having the US it was very painful over that leftside near my ribs. with my urine test showed miroscpic blood and that i had no infection. I went for the CT scan and it showed nothing no mass in the left kidney. I still have alot of pain in that area. Does that happen alot? and things show up on a US and not a CT scan? and any thoughts on all this? thank you and take care Midway.

get an MRI and an IVP of the kidney. if i had to guess, the mass is on the CT but the radiologist missed it. ideally, your doctor should go to the radiology facility, have them pull the films for him, he should hand carry them to the radiologist there or at a hospital he attends, and have a radiologist look specifically at where the US showed the mass to be and see if anything is there on the CT. having both studies side by side would be ideal. the ultrasound is generally on a VCR tape though, but there are usually at least a few pictures printed from it. some might argue that you had a stone that showed up on the US and that the stone passed and therefore the CT was negative. however, if the stone passed, you would know. they are very painful when they pass.

As Amnia said, the mass could have been present on the CT scan, but the radiologist could have missed it, especially if the CT scan was done without IV contrast. An MRI should give more information.
