Subject: Fatigue as Initial Symptom...stomach Cancer?

About 4 months ago I began to notice that I couldn't do as much as usual without becoming tired. Over time I developed mild background feeling of fatigue, but was still able to function in my daily activities. Two months ago the fatigue took over and interrupted my work and leisure life. I have no energy or interest in things that used to interest me. For a time I had nocturnal churning of my gut and a cough, but a g-i doc put me on Aciphex, which calmed the cough and hyperactive bowel sounds at night. A week after starting the Aciphex, he scoped me and found gastritis. I've continued the Aciphex, bland diet, elevation of bed head, etc. BUT the fatigue persists on a daily basis. My appetite is far from normal, but food still tastes good, and I can eat almost as much as usual. I eat more frequently to maintain my weight and have done so. I used to skip meals to keep the weight down, but now find I lose weight if I skip meals. Blood tests are all negative, as are CT and Pet scans. I don't have any consistent focal pain in my belly, but I do have post-prandial bloating fairly frequently, i.e. fullness between the navel and sternum. I am concerned that I could have linitis plastica, but don't know what test to request next or what doctor might help. Any suggestions or opinions from this limited description? Would it be unusual for fatigue to be the first and by far the most bothersome symptom of linitis plastica? Thanks.

Don

I would say that it could be an early warning of linitis plastica / signet cell carcinoma. My husband's stomach cancer was only diagnosed after he became unable to swallow and by then it was inoperable.

With hindsight we realised how very tired he had been during the year preceding the diagnosis so I think it would be sensible for you to get this checked out early.

My husband started to go to bed in the afternoon but at the time we put this down to early morning starts at work and the stress of starting our own business. He also started to lose weight. I wish we had had the opportunity to do something before it was too late.

You've nothing to lose by going to see your doctor - an endoscopy would confirm the presence of a tumour
